I mean consider the following:
* Loads of press for 'Pearl Jam'
* VH1 Storytellers
* Music Videos
* A commercial, shiny sounding album, full of attempted anthemic rock music that we haven't really heard since Ten
* Appearing with U2 on the same stage

the nothing ventured - the nothing feigned
nope pj didn't sell out. If you think about it they did less press for it than any other artist does for any of their cd's. It just seems like a lot cuz it's pj, when they do anything press related it seems huge.
And no, they did not. Chris Cornell sold out. The distinction should really be clear at this point!!
Hahaha! Couldn't have put it better myself
... and I still think Drive-By Truckers are better.
Sell out...that terminology is dead
Who the fuck cares
does that affect the sound of their music to you or something
I sell out everyday, going to work to a job that I really hate just because I need to make 70 G's in today's society
"Sell Out" ... "G's"....... pfft. If you're not part of the solution you're part of the problem bro...
joking aside, you're spot on. its not a real term.
If PJ make videos like Do The Evolution again im all for them making them. That shit is awesome
Yo Yo...I spend my G's on Bling and 50 Cent albums
I down with whatever they put out, the life wasted video was kind of shotty but that is their artistic perogative, DTE video was sick, wouldn't that be sweet, another collaboration with Todd McFarlane to go along with the Brenden O'Brien produced record....Sell out or not, I am down with it...
Attention spans are really low these days. Record sales are poor even for the biggest Pop Stars. Not many bands could move 10-20 million albums the way Pearl Jam did in the early-mid 90's;especially with the internet.
Pearl Jam had their work cut out for them. It's not 1993 anymore...Pearl Jam can't get away with being well...Pearl Jam.
The sad fact of the matter is, aside from Pearl Jam's large fan base...Music has moved on.
Pearl Jam are considered legendary...Considered a great Band...But the kids these days only really know of them through their older siblings or frightenly enough...Their Parents :( Kids have to work alot harder than they'd like to find great bands bands like Pearl Jam.
The band is up against some pretty shitty odds from here on out; especially since by mainstream music standards, Pearl Jam basically fell off the map somwhere around 1996.
In reality, Pearl Jam are not going to sell Millions and Millions of records anymore. They've got a big enough fanbase to sustain themselves...Tour Sucessfully...and continue to make the music they want to make. And if you really stop and think about that...It's a pretty good life for a band that is 18-20 years into their career...
As for selling out...I think this entails far worse horrifc, vile, and ulitmatly embarrasing promotion tactics other than appearing every so often on TV, or getting an unknown director from Brazil to direct your 1 and only music video that mostly know one including the most die hard fans really understood or even liked.
Just be thankful they're not up there "Dancing With The Stars".
Exactly, who the fuck cares?
I guess I'm a sell out too because I'm at a job I hate right now as well....thats why I spend so much time on the pit!
The world was not ready for PJ back then...
....what was counter culture then is main stream now...
Politics, Rotting Economy, Environmental Issues...these are the foremost things discussed today which are themes in many of PJ songs dating back from Ten to the present. Most people didn't want to hear of that stuff back in the early 90's, now that we have our heads out of our asses folks relate more and in turn want to see more of PJ.....Culture was at a different place 15 years ago, they were more interested in turning PJ into a boyband of sorts, causing PJ to withdrawal from the limelight, since then PJ has elevated their status above the superficial nonsense that plagues " pop culture " which offers many a reprieve from the shit out there. I am glad they are " selling out ", I wish I had access to their stuff back in the 90's more but I guess that is what made the band into what they are now...peace
And still very Good.
Album sales mean dick these days.

I would define "selling out" as PJ doing something they were morally opposed to just for money. And promoting their music doesn't qualify. Hiring Timabaland to slick up your CD "for the kids," putting your song in a commercial for a product you despise, or charging $350 for concert tickets AND getting a cut of all Stub Hub sales (Madonna is doing this right now) are things that I would qualify as shi**y moves to make just for money. VH1 Storytellers? No way, that was awesome and 100% genuine PJ.
I met a boy wearing vans, 501s, and a
Dope beastie t, nipple rings, and
New tattoos that claimed that he
Was ogt,
From 92,
The first ep.
And in between
Sips of coke
He told me that
He thought
We were sellin out,
Layin down,
Suckin up
To the man.
Well now Ive got some
A-dvice for you, little buddy.
Before you point the finger
You should know that
Im the man,
And if Im the man,
Then youre the man, and
Hes the man as well so you can
Point that fuckin finger up your ass.
All you know about me is what Ive sold you,
Dumb fuck.
I sold out long before you ever heard my name.
I sold my soul to make a record,
Dip shit,
And you bought one.
So Ive got some
Advice for you, little buddy.
Before you point your finger
You should know that
Im the man,
If Im the fuckin man
Then youre the fuckin man as well
So you can
Point that fuckin finger up your ass.
All you know about me is what Ive sold you,
Dumb fuck.
I sold out long before you ever heard my name.
I sold my soul to make a record,
Dip shit,
And you bought one.
All you read and
Wear or see and
Hear on tv
Is a product
Begging for your
Fatass dirty
Dollar
So...shut up and
Buy my new record
Send more money
Fuck you, buddy.
It said "Life is nothing but a dream."
I've spent so many years in question
To find I'd known this all along.
--> Nothing wrong with being proud of the new album
* VH1 Storytellers
--> An attempt to actually get music on VH1 ......what's wrong with that? I wasn't exactly a glorified performance, it was pretty laid back.
* Music Videos
--> Life wasted, which wasn't your run of the mill music video.
* A commercial, shiny sounding album, full of attempted anthemic rock music that we haven't really heard since Ten
--> Disagree, there really isn't any anthem songs on there and I don't think they even tried to make one. It was just a straight forward rock album.
* Appearing with U2 on the same stage
--> Not that big of a deal......wasn't it for charity even?
1. They hardly had loads of press, more than the last couple albums yes, but nowhere near LOADS.
2. On Storytellers they performed Sleight Of Hand, Insignificance, Unemployable, Gone, & Army Reserve when they could have performed Black, Evenflow, Yellow Ledbetter and Jeremy. Even the cover they performed was Here's to The State of Mississippi when they could have done Last Kiss. So think about that for a second or two.
3. The video for Life Wasted was an artsy video made by an artist not a video director. Far from a commercial video. The WWS video isn't even really a true video either.
4. Ed is friends with Bono and likes them, this is nothing new. Pearl Jam has opened for them in the past as well. The Poverty History thing was for poverty dude, COME ON.
5. Self Titled was a pretty damn awesome album. The gloss you speak of is all the producer. I think the album was done just right, other than the edited Mike solo on Life Wasted.
So the verdict is in:
Get your head out of your asshole.
that all that pretty much needs to be said
^^Yup
who cares, what does sell out even mean? Explain to me how you've heard of a band that plays in arenas that does "sell out", I mean come on man, shut up.
