Question: What's Everyone Gonna Do When Pearl Jam Inevitably Retire???

people dying (a la nirvana)
people getting drugged up (STP)
people hating each other (pink floyd)
tragedy (almost pj)
front man being an asshole (creed)
not because they choose to end. it's not like they go, oh well, 20 years is up, let's just stop.
it seems to me if they've been through some of the worst tragedies of their lives (ie: roskilde) and they're still together. they also still like each other, and i dont see either of them as unstable, like cobain was, or wanting to get high like some of them used to in the past (mccready). they seem like intelligent, respectful people, and they all work well together (which is why i think dave a. had to go, he wasnt in the same mindset as the rest of the band). plus, theyve all said that they wanted to go on for a long long time and their fanbase does too, so why should they stop now? they could be the next rolling stones and keep going until they get so old and decrepit that they cant play because of their senility and arthritis.
McCready has said he doesn't want to be the next keith richards, up there playing when he's really old.
however, I was up really close to ed this weekend and holy shit, I cannot believe that guy's in his 40s. Look at the whole band, they're all ripped and look great. They might get older in years but I don't see them tiring out any time soon.0 -

How long will the pit last after the band has ceased to be?
Will everyone sell their memorabilia or hold onto it cause it might go up in price?
How long do you think until the inevitable 'Announcement' ?????
SHUT THE HELL UP!!!
i want to stay in denial land, the place where they never get old and never break up or retire and you almost destroyed that happy place you bastard!!
i hope you are happy!!0 -
I can see them "slowing down" in the near future but I don't think we'll see them "hang it up" as a group for a long time.Like a word misplaced...nothing said...what a waste0

seriously, the way I see it is, none of these guys are even close to being old enough to be my parents (they were in like jr high when I was born). that means we are of the same "generation" (losely defined). therefore, there will always be pearl jam as long as I live.

From what I've read it seems like the only variable here is how well they get along with each other. Obviously there were some rough patches in the early days, and sometimes I get the vibe from stuff I've read around here, and of course the 'Single Video Theory' release that Ed and Stone in particular can butt heads, but apart from that... why exactly would they break up? I mean every major act I can think of involves musicians who go on making music even if they split... It's not like any of the Beatles stopped making music when they split, or any of the members of Pink Floyd, The Band... any of them. Once a musician, always a musician. It's not like Jeff is going to quit the band so he can go become an accountant.
So again that only leaves the question of how well they get along.0 -
this is my contingency plan:

why do people even TALK about them breaking up?!
we still have a long time!
they get along well. they're relaxed about making music when they want to. they don't force themselves to. they love making music. they live for making music. why would they retire any time soon?? they were pretty obviously enjoying themselves during the last tour, why would they quit now?
people are so paranoid :eek:0 -
Have a lot more money from not following around the band.- Busted down the pretext

Do what all the Zeppelin fans do.Up here so high I start to shake, Up here so high the sky I scrape, I've no fear but for falling down, So look out below I am falling now, Falling down,...not staying down, Could’ve held me up, rather tear me down, Drown in the river0

Said it before, they won't ever officially retire or break-up. You just won't hear anything for a long time. No new music, no shows. Maybe a side thing or charity event all of a sudden. Then one day there will be a tour announced and all will be well. Then maybe an album in the works. Right now they all have families , kids, and are living life at there own pace. If you look at these guys in their early 40s its amazing how well they look. You would think at leastone would start looking old but seems like they are leaving that to us fans.0

and what's that? notice that the albums are just as good at this very moment as they were when they first came out and so you don't really need the band to be active to enjoy them?
that would work for me. but I don't know where all the poster collectors are going to get their fix.2000: Camden 1, 2003: Philly, State College, Camden 1, MSG 2, Hershey, 2004: Reading, 2005: Philly, 2006: Camden 1, 2, East Rutherford 1, 2007: Lollapalooza, 2008: Camden 1, Washington D.C., MSG 1, 2, 2009: Philly 1, 2, 3, 4, 2010: Bristol, MSG 2, 2011: PJ20 1, 2, 2012: Made In America, 2013: Brooklyn 2, Philly 2, 2014: Denver, 2015: Global Citizen Festival, 2016: Philly 2, Fenway 1, 2018: Fenway 1, 2, 2021: Sea. How long do you think until the inevitable 'Announcement' ?????
Same thing I did when Queen, Led Zeppelin, Yes, Miles Davis, Grateful Dead, Phish, Talking Heads, The Kinks, Etc. all stopped playing for whatever reason.....my life went on just like it normally did. Oh and I started listening to other new bands like Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Explosions in the Sky that came out.
My life was going on before Pearl Jam and will go on after, why on earth would I have a contingency plan??? And yes as time goes by it seems more and more likely, of course it does, no band plays forever. But come on are there people whos whole lives revolve around PJ, I sure hope not. As for me I love PJ, but I listen to ALL kinds of music, Jazz, Dixieland Jazz, old country, classical, why think about, how long until the inevitable 'Announcement'???
When it comes down to it, there's more to life and music than Pearl Jam, they are a strong part of my life, they were one of best friends (Richard Rudolph) favorite bands when died of an aneurysm in late 1994. So they (Pearl Jam) have a special place in my heart, I find myself at shows thinking of him when they play a song he liked or thinking he would like a song that they play that came out after he died.
But my friend Richard was like me, he listened to everything, he passed away about 8 months before Jerry Garcia died, he was like me a huge Deadhead, we both saw over 100 Grateful Dead show, me around 170. But I know what he would have done if he were alive when Jerry died. His life would go on and he would keep searching for new bands and music in that never ending quest in life of going to concerts and buying records, for people like him and I and many others out there will not stop till the day we die as we are addicted to music, not just one band. I blame my parents for letting me go to a Rolling Stones concert when I was 12 years old in 1981, after that I was hooked like a junkie on smack........[img][/img]9/5/92, 11/20/93, 3/14,15/94, 9/16/95, 10/14,15/2000
