why do people even TALK about them breaking up?!
we still have a long time!
they get along well. they're relaxed about making music when they want to. they don't force themselves to. they love making music. they live for making music. why would they retire any time soon?? they were pretty obviously enjoying themselves during the last tour, why would they quit now?

    people are so paranoid

Said it before, they won't ever officially retire or break-up. You just won't hear anything for a long time. No new music, no shows. Maybe a side thing or charity event all of a sudden. Then one day there will be a tour announced and all will be well. Then maybe an album in the works. Right now they all have families , kids, and are living life at there own pace. If you look at these guys in their early 40s its amazing how well they look. You would think at leastone would start looking old but seems like they are leaving that to us fans.

Do what all the Zeppelin fans do.

and what's that? notice that the albums are just as good at this very moment as they were when they first came out and so you don't really need the band to be active to enjoy them?

that would work for me. but I don't know where all the poster collectors are going to get their fix.

We all know its gonna happen...come on...the guys are like gettin old and wont be around for ever...I been saying 'Its their last album' since Binaural but as time goes on it seems more and more likely!

    Whats ur contingency plan?

How long will the pit last after the band has ceased to be?

Will everyone sell their memorabilia or hold onto it cause it might go up in price?

How long do you think until the inevitable 'Announcement' ?????

Same thing I did when Queen, Led Zeppelin, Yes, Miles Davis, Grateful Dead, Phish, Talking Heads, The Kinks, Etc. all stopped playing for whatever reason.....my life went on just like it normally did. Oh and I started listening to other new bands like Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Explosions in the Sky that came out.

My life was going on before Pearl Jam and will go on after, why on earth would I have a contingency plan??? And yes as time goes by it seems more and more likely, of course it does, no band plays forever. But come on are there people whos whole lives revolve around PJ, I sure hope not. As for me I love PJ, but I listen to ALL kinds of music, Jazz, Dixieland Jazz, old country, classical, why think about, how long until the inevitable 'Announcement'???

When it comes down to it, there's more to life and music than Pearl Jam, they are a strong part of my life, they were one of best friends (Richard Rudolph) favorite bands when died of an aneurysm in late 1994. So they (Pearl Jam) have a special place in my heart, I find myself at shows thinking of him when they play a song he liked or thinking he would like a song that they play that came out after he died.

But my friend Richard was like me, he listened to everything, he passed away about 8 months before Jerry Garcia died, he was like me a huge Deadhead, we both saw over 100 Grateful Dead show, me around 170. But I know what he would have done if he were alive when Jerry died. His life would go on and he would keep searching for new bands and music in that never ending quest in life of going to concerts and buying records, for people like him and I and many others out there will not stop till the day we die as we are addicted to music, not just one band. I blame my parents for letting me go to a Rolling Stones concert when I was 12 years old in 1981, after that I was hooked like a junkie on smack........

They didn't get famous when they were super young. Ten came out August 29, 1991 Jeff was 28, Stone was 25, Mike was 25, Eddie was 26..... what was that one famous band where the some of the guys were so young they couldn't even play in the bar?

If they make it to 2016, the year they make it to the rock and roll hall of fame, then I'll be pleased.

I say not to think and enjoy them while there still around, the Who are still going maybe they will continue as well.

But now you got me thinking so...Imagine PJ in their 60's. Will they retire all at once or one by one or a few at a time?

Geez this as got me thinking about death. Something we've all talked about one time or another. If someone does go to the other side, will the guys stay together?

I don't know what my plan would be, I'll cross that bridge when I get to it, or we all can cross it together!

How long will the pit last? not sure, good question tho

I will hold tightly to everything they've given me...and not because of how much it might be worth....it's priceless to me.

What’s self destruction and how can we last?

Compared to what? Shitty to mediocre bands? This is the best band of nearly the last 20 years... They'll keep playing together as long as they will want to - Stones, Who, Neil Young & Crazy Horse, Dylan - this is the crowd they can be officially included with and those dudes are in their 60's and still goin strong. Granted I don't know what they'll sound like in 20 years, but I don't see how 17 years is a long time in the grand scheme of things. Better yet, I think this is the first time ever that a band, including the bands above, who are putting out as well, if not better, shit (studio and live) than they did when they were younger. Not only have they adapted, but they're also sounding as strong as ever.
You know Jearlpam, you're right. Point well spoken.

i dont think they will ever officially retire for another 15 - 20 years. but they will take longer breaks between albums and tours and stuff. we're seeing that right now with the albums at least. used to be every 2 years or so. now its over 3 years. i think they will be around in one way or another for a long time. what i dont know is how they will continue to play songs like Leash or Whipping or Satan's Bed when they are in their 50's and shit though.

Thats the best post on this thread by a mile simply because 1. I agree with it and 2. Its kind of happening now i.e. what he says. Albums are taking longer to make, tours are getting shorter but hell their love for what they are doing is still very strong. You only have to read reviews of the recent tour or like me just keep watching the performances at the Who tribute. That was a Band who kind of put themselves at the top of their tree, U2 and REM have done it in the past and its only made them stronger and everytime they seem to come back better than before. Thats because as a fan you simply miss them.
I for one believe they will keep going for sometime but at a pace and on their terms that they are happy with. Putting pressure on them to keep doing more and more really is unessacary as they obviously still love what they are doing and really have never ever give any indication that their time is up. So be patient and enjoy them, there's much more to come from Pearl Jam. From now on though you may have to wait a little longer - I'm happy with that and so should you be!
"First of all, there’s the palpable camaraderie and good feeling you get from the entire band as they smile and nod at each other, and huddle together in various formations throughout the show --- They look like they really like each other. They look stoked!"

I thought this was going to happen around 94/95 ish... if they made it past those years then I think we are golden. They still look pretty happy playing with each other then I don't see it happening for awhile if at all. But who knows, it could happen tomorrow.

I really don't think they'll ever retire. They are the Stones of the 90's. Barring some cataclysmic personnel event, I think they'll play music as long as they are alive.

When I was sixteen I saw Pink Floyd sans Waters...the Momentary Lapse tour...and Dave Gilmour was all of forty-one or two...and I thought, "God, how do these geezers do it?"

Now I am thirty-seven, amost thirty eight, and still ready to rock...I just saw Rush...they were rock solid...and they are all well into their fifties...I think Geddy Lee might even be almost sixty...you'd never know...yes, he's not handsome, but he never has been.

I've seen the Allman Bros quite a few times...Gregg Allman is getting up there...so are Butch and Jaimoe...they are still rockin' and the road goes on forever, or so they say. Or maybe that's their giant mushroom talking.

The Boss is nearly 60 and playing nearly as well as ever, at least to the ears of a non-Boss devotee.

REM are all into their 50s and just finished a tour. And let's not forget Uncle Neil.

One of the great things about Pearl Jam, as well as the most frustrating, is that when they are not touring or recording they are not even really a band...that has helped them survive.

Personally, and it's completely up to them, but I think the end of the band could well be another ten or fifteen years off. Of course, that might only be three or four tours at their current pace, but I'll take it.

    And there's always bootlegs!

For me....I have enough stuff now, that I have a lifetime of enjoyment. There are still SO MANY things that I could and can collect that will keep me busy for years and years to come. Not too mention the SHITLOAD of things that will surface long after they have ridden off into the sunset. There is stuff that surfaces even now, just THINK about what will come out after the fact. Yes, it will happen, we all know that, but what we have now, is really just the tip of the iceberg, from a collectors point of view...:) imho.

Or keep on rockin and gettin more gold
    Things I do look awful strange . . .
Give me a million and I'll make some change

Hell the Stones, the Who, McCartney, . . . are all big money draws as they approach 70. I don't know bout you dude but I'm hoping for some stage diving opportunities when I'm 70. I plan to be there at the first show of the Eddie Vedder Hip Replacement Solo Tour in 2030 and when PJ headlines Lollapalooza again in 2025 for the 5th time.
