And the little boy was from Mexico, in Houston for treatment. Since January 1st 13,000 deaths from the common flu in the US.

Should the WHO not be held responsible for a possible outbreak of hysteria rather than the flu by raising the "threat" level?

totally agree with this, my university has 6 reported cases but everyone is recovering like any flu illness, unfortunately everybody else at the school is flipping out

Not me. And isn't the swine flu no worse than the "regular" flu as far as severity????

Why should it? The 'threat level' is based purely on epidemiology, not pathology. I think WHO maybe need to reword it since people hear "rising threat" and think they're more likely to die, but the WHO are just doing their job. If they weren't recording the epidemiology then they wouldn't be doing their job and people would still complain.

The hype is down to the media misreading the scientific data like they always do.

Since this hasn't been locked out or moved quite yet...

There are dozens of different strains of flu (influenza). Each one has it's own characteristics. Seasonal Flu, the one you mentioned which kills 36,000 people annually in the U.S. alone, is the one that you get shots for every year. Typically those most affected are on the extremes of the age scale: very young or very old. Avian Flu (H5N1) and Swine Flu (H1N1) are drastically different because their most deadly variants attack people in the 18-34(roughly) year old range much more aggressively than the Seasonal Flu. The thing to be concerned with (not worried about) is the current lack of immunizing shots available to the public and the aggressiveness of the strain.

The bottom line about this whole thing is that you are no more at risk now than you were the day before all this hit the news. You're just keenly aware of the conditions of transmission and how it affects large populations now. You can read more about U.S. flu trends here: http://www.cdc.gov/flu/weekly/fluactivity.htm and educate yourself and those around you about seasonal trends. It's interesting stuff.

I think the band needs to continue their tour plans no matter what. If they have fears of infection they can just perform with masks on or maybe in a giant bubble. Instead of the boy in the bubble it can be the band in the bubble (would insert creative photoshop picture here if I had the skills). Just an idea for the band to consider
