WHt were they going for on this song? One of the most bizaare if not the most bizaare pearl jam song, along with Bugs and Aye Davanita. Though this song takes the cake.
What was the point of it? What mood were they trying to convey?

Little bit of thought here. I'm thinking Bugs is a statement about fame , fans and how he eventually came to embrace us.
Foxy mop is another statement song but more about how society can fuck with kids and warp thier thinking.
Aye Davanita was the beginning of the "experiments" with music. It does have a groove to it._____________________________________SIGNATURE________________________________________________

I really liked that song from the beginning. Not sure why exactly. Plus it kept me busy for a while, because getting all the little snippets and samples took me quite some time. Still somewhat creepy, though. But in a good way.

sounds like someone about ten years old or so to me.Thorns2010 wrote:mickeyrat wrote:Little bit of thought here. I'm thinking Bugs is a statement about fame , fans and how he eventually came to embrace us.

I remember reading somewhere that EV added it without the rest of the band's knowledge at the last minute before the album went to presses, and that the rest of the guys were pissed off about it... I've heard that fact repeated time after time, I just can't find a more 'official' conformation of it right now.0 -

I remember reading it was a tape of a patient in a mental ward that was slowed down and sped up speed wise to contort the voice. Also Jack Irons' first drum session with the band.He who forgets will be destined to remember.

The recording of the woman is actually from an old psychology video that students used to watch about OCD and mental illness. I can assure you the sound is not sped up or slowed down. She talks to herself using different voices, it's actually not as creepy as the music would suggest.

Because the groove Jeff and Jack get going at the end kicks fucking ass!0
-
I dont listen to it all the time. But its a great song and Im glad it was included. its not the best song to play at parties.

But its pretty experimental, and like soulsinging said, Jeff and Jack have a great groove.
(soulsinging, nice to see your name)
Anyway, yes its an older lady talking, and she is a patient at a mental hospital. I thought I remembered Ed an Jeff saying that they were watching the news or some documentary and this came on. Not sure.Turn this anger into
Nuclear fission0 -
They had space on the album, Ed must have thought it was interesting. Maybe he was testing how the critics and all would take it.0

putting this sort of song on an album shows influence from the bands that inspired them...
for instance, The Beatles have Wild Honey Pie and The Piggies (i forget what that song is really called) and Pink Floyd has a lot of that experimental stuff...
aside from the fact they must have been tripping to write these songs, the purpose is to kind of break up the album into sections...like the White Album would just never be the same if (when listening to it in order) you didn't hear those quirky little tid bits in there0 -
I hear ya! they included songs like that which aren't bad just...'different' lol on albums yet left out songs from 'Ten' like "Brother" and "Alone" etc.0
