Ever listen to a song or an album for the first time, or for the 60th time, and get tears in your eyes, and a lump in your throat?

What albums have had this sort of an impact on you?

The cover is fairly haunting. It doesn't last for me, but I can understand it.

There are loads of songs that have this effect on me, but none more so than the title track from Ask Me No Questions by Bridget St. John, released on John Peel's Dandelion Label and featuring John Martyn on guitar. Live/later versions don't have the effect on me that this original version has.

"i will follow you into the dark" - death cab for cutie

i've always thought of my grandparents when i would hear this song...especially when they were alive. the fact that they both just passed a week apart from each other makes it almost unbearable to even think of the song. i cried when i heard the song live a couple years ago...and i cried hysterically when i heard it on scrubs the other night. i'm crossing my fingers that they won't play it when i see them live again in a couple months...i may have to leave the show :(

two years ago my granpa passed away and we were close. I never really lost a close family member to death up until that point in my life so it was my first experience with it. I was far away from my family and did not know what to do.

I just closed my door and listened to neil young's helpless over and over and over again.

i know it's not what the song is about but i sure felt like the title.

I've never listened to the song since that day. If it comes on teh radio i turn it off, i got the live at massey hall and i've never listened to it on that.

I think i could listen to it now and not get upset, but i'm not sure.

Elliott Smith - Either/Or (whole album)

    Elliott Smith - Twilight

Ben Harper - Give a Man a Home

Twilight is the saddest song ever written!

Other Side - PJ for me. The last line does it every time.
  • Most Pink Floyd stuff because it just sounds so good!

The other day it was Shine on you Crazy Diamond. Comfortably Numb gets my heart strings too.

My Mom died in 2007. My sister and I picked out the music for the service. We didnt want anything too traditional (although there was one church song that my mom had requested-there was a letter in her jewelry box). I chose Long Road, because my Mom loved Neil Young, and well, I love PJ. One year I called her from Bridge School so she could hear Neil's opening set. That meant a lot to her. So Long Road was kind of like our musical link. Of course, that one makes me cry.

    but also...
In the course of picking music for my Mom's funeral, I was going through my iPod and saw Man of the Hour. Obviously, that wouldnt work for her, but I know that I will play it at my Dad's funeral someday. So, everytime I hear it, I just think about how awful it is going to be to lose another parent.

I have tears in my eyes just from typing this.
