i've always thought of my grandparents when i would hear this song...especially when they were alive. the fact that they both just passed a week apart from each other makes it almost unbearable to even think of the song. i cried when i heard the song live a couple years ago...and i cried hysterically when i heard it on scrubs the other night. i'm crossing my fingers that they won't play it when i see them live again in a couple months...i may have to leave the show :(i'm much better now though...but essentially february was the worst month of my life thus far!!

two years ago my granpa passed away and we were close. I never really lost a close family member to death up until that point in my life so it was my first experience with it. I was far away from my family and did not know what to do.
I just closed my door and listened to neil young's helpless over and over and over again.
i know it's not what the song is about but i sure felt like the title.
I've never listened to the song since that day. If it comes on teh radio i turn it off, i got the live at massey hall and i've never listened to it on that.
I think i could listen to it now and not get upset, but i'm not sure.Charlotte 00 | Charlotte 03 | Asheville 04 | Atlanta 12 | Greenville 16 | Columbia 16 |Seattle 18 | Nashville 22 | Ohana Festival 24 x2 | Atlanta 25 x20 -

My Mom died in 2007. My sister and I picked out the music for the service. We didnt want anything too traditional (although there was one church song that my mom had requested-there was a letter in her jewelry box). I chose Long Road, because my Mom loved Neil Young, and well, I love PJ. One year I called her from Bridge School so she could hear Neil's opening set. That meant a lot to her. So Long Road was kind of like our musical link. Of course, that one makes me cry.
but also...
In the course of picking music for my Mom's funeral, I was going through my iPod and saw Man of the Hour. Obviously, that wouldnt work for her, but I know that I will play it at my Dad's funeral someday. So, everytime I hear it, I just think about how awful it is going to be to lose another parent.
I have tears in my eyes just from typing this.0 -

When Ed played 'Blackbird' in Montreal... He was talking about Obama and just the song in general... I was in tears. It was one of those moments that was just so beautiful. I've had lots of those at concerts.0

Yep. i had almost forgot about this one. i remember being a kid and hearing my mom and dad fighting. Fucks a kid up inside. Now i have three children of my own. Not long ago my wife and i got in an argument. My nine year old son retreated to a corner in his room and cried. i hated myself even more than usual."When all your friends and sedatives mean well but make it worse... better find yourself a place to level out."0 -
