Obama: "Crisis Could Turn To Catastrophe With Inaction"

What does our fearless leader mean by this statement, that he just made at a press conference?
I am confused, because i was under the impression that this crisis was not real, that the media was just overreacting, and that people who thought otherwise were fearmongers and conspiracy theorists.
When the president of the United States says that this "crisis could turn to catastrophe", what exactly does he mean? What is the current crisis, and if this is a crisis, what is a catastrophe?
Just wondering.

call me kooky, but I'm pretty sure the crisis he is referring to is the growing number of folks losing their jobs...0 -
looking for a little validation there eh drifting? thought you were above that.
errr......seriously, i don't think anyone truly doubted there is a 'crisis' in our midst, i think many just fought against a 'the sky is falling' mentality in thought and approach on the topic. absolutely, let's not bury our heads in the sand, but go about it in a thoughtful and considered way for the best course of action.Stay with me...

Do you seriously not know the difference between a crisis and a catastrophe, or are you just suggesting that the current situation couldn't possibly get any worse?
Either way i think you,re just spouting off."When all your friends and sedatives mean well but make it worse... better find yourself a place to level out."0 -

Fear tactics in order to pass an agenda? Really?
We're rapidly approaching double digit unemployment. That's pretty damned scary."When all your friends and sedatives mean well but make it worse... better find yourself a place to level out."0 -

Google: Rahm Emanuell "Waste a Good Crisis"
Yes. Fear tactics to get an agenda passed.
You know, you can't let a good crisis go to waste.

Near double digit unemployment numbers, every day companies laying off thousands of people, housing market in the toilet, financial institutions and the auto industry struggling (not that they didn't bring that upon themselves in many ways), the world being in a recession...not just the US.
I'd characterize that is being "crisis-like".
What is a catastrophe? I don't know, but things are getting worse every day, and I do believe something needs to be done. Is Obama's plan going to turn everything around? Maybe, maybe not. Most economists don't even know and I do think they know more than most of us on here.
When you are tumbling down a hill and nearing a cliff, I do think you need to grasp onto something and do what you can when you can because if you make it to the ledge there isn't much chance at that point.0 -
giving 4bl to Acorn is a step in the right direction and every other social program these frauds are trying to pass off as stimulus. If he is so concerned about the current situation why not tell them to take all of the pork and crap out of the bill and just pass a stand alone stimulus bill.0

It's one thing to say the world is in a serious mess right now... it's something different to think there are evil men behind curtain's controlling it all. Nobody know's what is going to happen. It's all speculation. Only thing I know for sure is friends are loosing jobs and having trouble paying their bills. People need help. Hope we can get it to them soon.0

5.2 bln for "community Development" That Acorn will be able to apply for. Come on when they apply for a community development grant you really don't think they will get any $$. Barry will reward them, that is how Chicago politics works. Another 4bln for smoking cessation programs. This strikes me as funny as they are going to fund the schip childrens healthcare bill with an increase in federal Tobacco taxes. Since that is the case the Govt should be promoting smoking. Why fund a bill where you have declining industry revenues year over year.
Lets be real with this bill it is anything but a Stimulus bill. Why is he crying about the mean Republicans, the Dems run the show now in DC.0 -

oh, it's 5.2 billion now...I see...
anyway, you said Acorn will get 4bl...and I called bullshit..and I'm correct in that assessment...I'd be willing to bet there are more that one community agency that will access these funds...
as for smoking and schip...yeah, it's a bad thing to help provide insurance for children and to help people quit smoking which will help keep medical costs down...yeah, what a dick...
you say this bill is not a stimulus, I guess little gnomes are going to do the work, and we all know gnomes aren't good consumers...0 -

That's the funniest part of all of this. The Dems control the House and Senate and yet all I hear are the Republicans are trying to water down and block the stimulus package. It almost seems as if Obama is trying to get Rep votes for two reasons: 1) show his ability to have bipartisan lesgislation 2) (and maybe even the larger reason) so that in 2 years, if the stimulus has little to no effect, the Reps can't stand up and say that they opposed the huge increase in spending which did not achieve its stated goals. I think #2 could be the greater reason just for the sheer fact that most jobs won't be created until 16 or 18 months after the plan is enacted... just about in time for elections. This is your notice that there is a problem with your signature. as for smoking and schip...yeah, it's a bad thing to help provide insurance for children and to help people quit smoking which will help keep medical costs down...yeah, what a dick... Never said it was bad to give assistance with healthcare for children. My point was it makes no sense to try to fund a program with a revenue stream that could be drying up as users of the product are consistently declining. Over time you will have a budget shortfall then you will have to find the money somewhere else to continue funding. Smokers are overall less of a drain on the system (long term SS etc) as they tend to die younger. Keeping medical costs down is another topic.
you say this bill is not a stimulus, I guess little gnomes are going to do the work, and we all know gnomes aren't good consumers...[/quote] 650mln for the digital conversion. Give me a break spend the forty bucks and convert on your own. We have become a nation of handouts
If you want to try to pass social programs do it on there own merit not under the guise of a stimulus bill. All I am saying is pass a real stimulus bill.0 -

That's my biggest gripe with the bs in this bill. Like you said, if you wanna fund social programs, ok do it but not in this bill. Pass a separate bill with social programs and let the people see how much money you want to funnel in that direction. Not under the guise of a stimulus package. This is your notice that there is a problem with your signature. Please remove it.
