That's the funniest part of all of this. The Dems control the House and Senate and yet all I hear are the Republicans are trying to water down and block the stimulus package. It almost seems as if Obama is trying to get Rep votes for two reasons: 1) show his ability to have bipartisan lesgislation 2) (and maybe even the larger reason) so that in 2 years, if the stimulus has little to no effect, the Reps can't stand up and say that they opposed the huge increase in spending which did not achieve its stated goals. I think #2 could be the greater reason just for the sheer fact that most jobs won't be created until 16 or 18 months after the plan is enacted... just about in time for elections.
2 is exactly right on. They got hammered for supporting the bank bailout back in october or nov. When W said the sky was falling and we must act. The big Maverick even supported that sham.
1 I think he wants to appear like he is being bipartisan but not really listen or adopt some of the ideas.0 -

That's my biggest gripe with the bs in this bill. Like you said, if you wanna fund social programs, ok do it but not in this bill. Pass a separate bill with social programs and let the people see how much money you want to funnel in that direction. Not under the guise of a stimulus package.
Exactly and the other concern I have is they are trying to just ram through a bill of this size in record time. Ti should also be noted that there are some conservative Dems who are alos having issues with the Bill.0 -
Pats54 wrote:as for smoking and schip...yeah, it's a bad thing to help provide insurance for children and to help people quit smoking which will help keep medical costs down...yeah, what a dick... Never said it was bad to give assistance with healthcare for children. My point was it makes no sense to try to fund a program with a revenue stream that could be drying up as users of the product are consistently declining. Over time you will have a budget shortfall then you will have to find the money somewhere else to continue funding. Smokers are overall less of a drain on the system (long term SS etc) as they tend to die younger. Keeping medical costs down is another topic.
you say this bill is not a stimulus, I guess little gnomes are going to do the work, and we all know gnomes aren't good consumers.. 650mln for the digital conversion. Give me a break spend the forty bucks and convert on your own. We have become a nation of handouts
If you want to try to pass social programs do it on there own merit not under the guise of a stimulus bill. All I am saying is pass a real stimulus bill.
fyi...the DTV bill was passed by the republican congress...it was called Digital Transition and Public Safety Act of 2005...I
yeah, those dems and Obama are to blame for that one...

Although efforts to move to digital has been four years in the making since the passage of the Digital Transition and Public Safety Act of 2005, government-issued vouchers meant to defray the cost of a digital converter box for low-income families exhausted faster than anticipated, leaving many without the financial wherewithal to make the switch.0 -

Yeah man, it just seems when someone from one side points out their facts someone from the other side points out other facts that somewhat pertain to the original main issue but really doesn't address anything in the end. It doesnt' matter, it's all bullshit, the amount of good either side has done is greatly tarnished by the amount of bullshit they allow to get by. I don't care how much dirt can be dug up pointing "murder" to either side. It is irrelevant, we are being fucked by both sides and that gets diluted through all these petty arguments over what good things have been done.
We need to get over this "my team is not as bad as your team...we use LUBE when we fuck the people over" mentality that so many people have.
But yeah, your point was a pretty good one, I didn't mean to single you out, I just quoted you because you were the last person to say something when I was reading this.0 -

where's that damnto denote sarcasm when you need it?
or do we go the way of RM and start to utilize  for that function, simply b/c now we have  ?
no sarcasm in my statement.
apologies.
i most definitely did not expect you to make such a statement, seriously. thus why i thought it was sarcasm. just goes to show, you can't always be certain, even if you think you may 'know' someone's ideas through many of their posts.
me, i definitely think we need to 'do something'....but i am hoping that, even if it's not a 100% success it will 'do something' enough to be at least a turning point in the right direction. sometimes that is enough. if it actually ends up being more successful, even better! and the idea of failure? well, failure is just not an option.Stay with me...

no apologies needed. Maybe I should have added a this in there before something. Because to me, spending money for children healthcare, condom distribution, smoking cessation and the various other pork spending in this bill will do nothing to stimulate the economy. Are some of these programs needed??? Most likely... should they be tied to a stimulus package??? Definitely not. As I said elsewhere, put all the social programs in a separate bill and pass it that way, not under the guise of a stimulus package. This is your notice that there is a problem with your signature. i'll agree with that.
altho i'm gonna guess that perhaps he doesn't think such a bill, all on it's own, would pass.....so blend it in with other things, push it thru in a stimulus package....and get what he wants? second-guessing of course, but i will readily admit obama is not immune from playing politics. i think most who want to get things done do...and probably must, to some extent.
as i said, i just choose to remain hopeful that many of these things will ultimately end up with some positive results for our country. i don't fool myself to think there are any quick fixes, or that any one thing will be a magic cure-all......but measured choices and decisions, and yes, action, is needed to move us forward.Stay with me...
