The same argument has been made on both sides over and over.

Can we not just say that some of us are more anal than others? This is going nowhere :p

yes i can admit that some people(me included) are more anal about some things than others. and tis never usually the good things either. ;):p:D

see? a perfect example of the evolution of the language and the appropriation of words from 'other' places.. youre using a word you dont even know the origin of and in doing so you hope you are using it in its proper context. but youre not quite sure. yet that doesnt stop you from using it does it? you use it cause it sounds right, no? :)

I certainly have no prolem with the evolution of language. "Snarky" is language evolution. Using than and then incorrectly isn't evolution; it is using words wrong.

Anyhoo (also language evolution), next topic please...

"then" and "than" is way down my list of typos/poor grammar mistakes that irritate me. It's almost understandable to me.

Same reason people fuck up 'their', 'they're' and 'there'.

Don't even get me started on 'ridiculous' and 'definitely'.

Oh, I wasn't rubbing it in or anything. I was just happy that I was using a term that actually made sense... to someone.

  • my pet peeve aside from incorrect spelling is people not being able to acknowledge that shit happens and thats just the way it is. what is SO wrong is extreme poverty and the continuing human rights abuses around the world. mixing up two similiar sounding (but differently spelt and meaning) words is nothing in the grand scheme of things. as is the fact that your 5/6 year old can easily distinguish between these two words. but then again so is incorrect spelling. :)

That's not the thead you're in though. This is about the confusion some people seem to have with those two words.

I always get my 'there's, theirs' muddled up unless I really think about it because I'm crap but I thought this topic should be second nature...

well what can i say... im a tangential thinker. :)

why would you think 'this topic' is second nature when youve admitted that if you dont really think about it, you yourself get there's and their's muddled?

its a fucking message board so instead of pics where ed is eating a lung, or Jeffs hairiest hat i wanted to start one about then or than... where did i say it was on a par with word hunger and poverty???

i see you are helping extreme poverty and continuing human rights abuses from the comfort of your salubrious homestead in one of the richest countries in the world.

you've totally contradicted yourself... ohhhh extreme hunger and poverty is my pet peeve... oh and bad spelling.. so its ok for you to get worked up about bad spelling but i'm not allowed to highlight the erroneous use of 'then' and 'than'

very hypocritical... which is no 4 in my list of pet peeves.

    police your own threads.

but their and there are phonetically exact so its a common and easy mistake... than and then are different.. phonetically speaking

This is how I explained my humor recently...

"I call it the eyedclaar humor ratio - basically one person out of a thousand thinks I'm hysterical, the rest would like to cave in my skull with a heavy, blunt object."

So, lucky you - one in a thousand!

I'd like to think I'm more than "one in a thousand"...although that wouldn't really bode well for you.
