    You've never heard of a non-religious marriage? I was brought up totally absent of religion, my husband does not practice religion, and we were married in a state park in Nevada on the red rock formations..

    Our wedding (which took place in a hotel room and was presided over by some lady we found on the internet, lol) was fully non-religious, too.

    In any event, tax, insurance purposes, survivor rights, medical rights, property ownership, and support issues should have nothing to do with who your chosen person in life is, if you sign a legally binding agreement with another person regardless of the traditional ceremony aspect.

    Can you really not be married in a secular service in America? Because you can in the UK. That is my point. In the UK, if this proposition was introduced, it would be logical to extend it to atheists and members of non-Church of England denominations and THAT would be obscene. Atheists here can get married. It is not a religious ceremony, they are married by a registrar, not a member of the clergy.

    Exactly. My guitar player conducted my marriage next to a raging waterfall in the middle of nowhere Wyoming. If anyone would have even brought religion up, I would have tossed them in the river to their death.

    oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.

    fat people should be banned from unicycling maybe, definitely from lycra legging stores... but not marriage... and gay folk can do what they want, i'm more scared of christian americans than i am of gay men... and i have a very taught and cute tooshie :)

    That there are those who aren't against gay marriage per se but believe that judao-christian people deserve to preserve the sanctity of their own marriages by disregarding gay marriage is just as bad.

    My ex and I got married in a registry office. He's an atheist in every way. There was no mention of God in the entire service. I could call it a civil union, but I don't have to and neither should anyone else.

    In fact, in the UK a solely religious ceremony must also be followed by a civil ceremony to be lawful. If you just get married in a church and don't sign the CIVIL register you're not married in law. Some people do this all in one go, others will have a seperate ceremony for each.
