it's not even just that Americans are less educated (in general knowledge) and more people here know what a Philosopher's Stone or the Northern Lights are (though there maybe is).
It's that if we don't know something, we try to find out.. basic interest in the world and shit...

not that we don't have our fare share of idiots, dumbasses and the like..just less of them in proportion it seems..

in the Uk we are all given the same PRIVILEGE... in the US it depends on daddys bak account.. but here we can all attain higher education.. and in Scotland its gratis ;)

the richest country in the world NOT providing FREE education or health care is far more alarming than Souly sitting on his arse casting doubts on his neighbours intelligence.. the richest nation in the world is spending billions on a war it need not be in whilst its own citizens children dont know what a fucking philospher is, or the Northern Lights... they know where Iraq is cos bodybags are labelled... ask them to point to Iceland and they are fucked

So you're saying the peasants can go to the same schools as the royals? I think not. There are the privileged/elite in the UK that go to the better schools too. All teachers and professors are the same there; they teach with the same energy and excellence?

There is free education in the US in the elementary to high school levels. It is called public school. However many of them suck! As for college education the lower middle class and poor can obtain grants from the government to pay for their college education. They must keep a passing grade in order to keep them. The grants are based on how much the parents make. The rich cannot obtain the grants but they can afford it anyway. The upper middle class are the ones who struggle with paying for college. Many of them take out student loans which they will pay back for up to 15 years after college. I don't feel sorry for the rich who have to pay for a college education but I do feel sorry for the ones who really struggle with the costs and are unable to get the grants.

But yeah I wish education and healthcare were free for everyone here. Hell I wish everything were free! Hmm free PJ concerts, cd's, dvd's, t-shirts and posters!

Anyhow the country I wish I lived in is Hawaii ;):D

I thought maybe we had reached some common ground on the issue.
    Oh well.

My eyesight is a bit blurred this morning, and for a second I thought this thread was called "Why do titties change from the UK to the US?" I thought this was about the physical effects of long haul flights, or something.

Prince William went to St.Andrews University, he went there along with all us commoners :) so yes thats what i'm saying

ALL Scottish kids get free education all the way to University if they are scottish..

of course money brings a privilege of choosing a public or private school... but private schools are for buggery not education :)

  • I remember when the 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' was changed to '...Hero Turtles' in this country because someone objected to the word 'Ninja'.

Is THAT why that happened? Stupid...

I do remember that the US toys were different to the UK ones, i.e. a lot cooler.

wow, why the debate? Chances are american kids are as stupid as other kids, and it's just that in america marketing and communication are taken much more seriously than in europe (though I guess we're coming to the same standards). And marketing has a tendancy to view every potential customer as a dumbass.

    LMAO :)

Well because I believe St. Andrews is where the British elite go just like Oxford and Cambridge. If universities had to choose between Prince William or a poor sucker they would choose William of course. The top US universities like Harvard, Yale and Princeton where the elite go also have underprivileged students too. All universities have to limit the amount of students so would St. Andrews choose a poor student over an elite?

I also believe that the top universities in the UK like St. Andrews and Oxford have the top professors therefore the teaching level is most likely better than some other universities which is same in the US in that respect.

I would love to travel all around the world to find out which place is the best place for me to live and who knows maybe it would be Scotland ;)

Sometimes name-changes happen for legal reasons. For example, the band Bush was known in Canada as "Bush x" due to an existing Canadian band with that name. Eventually the British Bush came to a financial agreement with the Canadian Bush and was allowed to drop the x.

Now if only we could find a way to drop the Bush W.

if 17 students and Prince William all went for 16 places at St Andrews uni and he was by far the worst in terms of grades... he wouldnt have got in... simple as that.

but all these TOP universities still have a standard which enables you to get in... i.e. 7 A+ grades means they'll look at you... if you have 3 C passes then you wont, regardless of how much money daddy has... its tougher to get into the top uni's but its not a privilege.. its purely on merit.

Fins is at Cambridge purely cos he is one clever fucker... but he's basically a bog-trotter from Ireland with a massive hairy head... he got into Cambridge for that reason, not because his dad is the 17th Duke of Wymbourne

Of course grades are a factor but I still believe they would have chosen William over another student with better grades.

    Is St. Andrews free?

I've wondered about the change in titles too...but I've also always wondered about the different words. For example courgettes, aubergine, gherkin, jumpers (very different from our jumpers in the States) vests (also very different from ours in the states). Why not just have the same words?

I thought Lord Byron had to have some strings pulled to get into Cambridge...if I remember correctly he wasn't the best of students? But maybe my mind is foggy (haven't had all my coffee this morning yet) and that was many moons ago. :p;)
