I always wonder why the majority of atheists Ive heard are very bitter toward people who believe in God. Im not saying this same characteristic isnt shared by some OVERLY conservative Christians and others, but it seems even when they say something like "You have your faith , I dont mind, just dont force it on me" kinda thing, it still seems to me like they dont even want to hear you opinion. I for one believe In God, I know he exists because I have had experiences that I cant deny. I go to church, its a contemporary church, but I dont believe anyone whosoever should let someone else tell them what to believe. Its between you and God.
Another strange thing I have noticed is that most people I have heard that are majorly against religion and/or God, had a bad experience with either the catholic church or the baptist church, Im not dissin' anybody from either, but I really dont like either of them for the most part.
I believe in evolution, I cant understand why so many christians cant accept the idea that God created us to evolve. Thats what I think, that God created us, and other things, to evolve.

All in all, I really dont hate atheists, I just want to know what made them decide that there was no God. I feel sad for them, (I REALLY dont mean it in a demeaning way at all) It just makes me sad.

The countless atrocities committed throughout history in the name of God or whatever deity you want to throw out there makes me sad. You feel sad for us while we wonder why you believe in fairy tales...

Well, I know a lot of atheist are hostile towards people of faith because they are constantly assaulted by it. You gotta realize that some of us have to lie to our own damn families about how we feel so we won't be held in disfavor.

We're the most hated, untrustworthy group out of all of them. Hell, people might like satanist more than us because atleast they beileve in a God.

On deciding there was no god. You know how you just feel that there is a god? That there is something higher and something after? I don't. Never have.

I consider myself an atheist. I am not a cold, cynical, scientific person though. I just don't believe that God is the only way to love and happiness. Never in my life have I felt God. Couple that with my general scepticism and you have a complete lack of need for one. There were times when I've felt like I've needed someone and there was nothing so I don't think there's anything beyond what I have here and, even if I was given irrefutable evidence of the existence of God, I wouldn't care. Not my idea of a benevolent creator. I don't need a conditional, petty god. I consider myself a very spiritual person but I don't need religion and I don't need any kind of interventionist god. A sunset, the sound of waves crashing at night, a person being there for you at the right time, beautiful music, that's all the higher power I need. Don't feel sorry for me. I'm not living for heaven, I'm living for now.

But here's the thing: what makes you believe there is a god? I don't want to get into a full-on god/no-god debate here, because it's futile and will just get locked after 9 pages of crap, but I don't think atheists have to justify a lack of faith. If you asked people why they don't believe cars exist, I could see your point, but it's not like there's undeniable proof that there is a god.

Yea I understand exactly what you mean. I know WAY many people have done really fucked up things and said it was in the name of God. That pisses me off because I know thats a big reason that people hate christianity. I think the crusades were total bullshit. Those so called christians did countless horrible things, that should should never be done to anybody. Hell they cannibalized people! But just because people claim to do something in the name of God, doesnt mean that its really what God wants. Too many people hid behind religion as a means to do things, like those polygamists marrying little girls and shit like that. There is a whole lot of fucked up things because of what "christians" have done, but I can honestly say they are doing wrong and I hate that people see that and think that is what God is about.

Where I live pretty much everyone is an atheist and religion isn't a big deal at all. There are no creationist here. So I can't really relate with this reason, though it's a very good one for American atheists.

The people who commit atrocities in the name of god are often convinced they are doing god's will. So, as an atheist I have to take your word or theirs.

Move up north, my friend. In the northeast, sports IS bigger than God. Trust me it is!

Europe! More specifically, Belgium. In my town, and I'm sure it's not an exception, only a few people go to church and they're mostly over 60.

If other people have religious beliefs they keep them to themselves. Creationism is considered a extremist and marginal belief. When I was in the States I was addressed by random religious people on several occasions. I have never been randomly addressed by a religious person here.

That my friend, is my idea of heaven. Yea, here in the states they got people standing on the street passing out bibles and such. And billboards with biblical passages on them and things of that nature.

In my old school, a group came in and gave everyone a free New Testament Bible. And you weren't allowed refuse one.

Wow. Where did you grow up?
  • Wow. Where did you grow up?

A little suburb in Ireland, just outside Dublin. It was a pretty religious school, even though it wasn't officially a Catholic one. We had a load of religious ceremonies that they made most kids go to - sometimes, Muslims or other religions would get exemptions, but never atheists. They even turned our graduation into a religious thing.

Luckily, my teachers for religion class were usually pretty cool, and willing to have proper debates with me. They usually told my parents that I knew more about religion than the kids who believed. :p
