Increased anxiety/paranoia due to smoking?

  • In this day and age... everyone knows the dangers.

And yep, listen to the addicted smokers, we're the ones who wish we'd never started... don't ya think that makes sense? I started when I was 9... sure I'd heard about the risks... but it was the cool thing to do  IMO there's no other reason for someone to want to start. I can't believe you're even debating this.

Whether everyone knows the dangers is irrelevant. You started when you were 9 and you're only a couple of years older than me. You knew the dangers as well. Oh but it was 'the cool thing to do', so that's fine.

And what do you think I'm debating? I took up smoking because when I was going through extreme anxiety, a cigarette was the only thing that would make my tense shoulders drop and relax. It now seems to be having the opposite effect so I don't like it and I'm giving up. No debate there.

I've had 2 cigarettes in as many days.

That's fine... it just makes about as much sense to me as somebody who becomes homeless taking heroin to make it all better.

and I was 9 almost 20 years ago

A vast majority of them do... not ignorant of the dangers, but inspite of them. Most of us who have tried any mind-altering drug are subconsciously - or maybe not so subconsciously - attracted to the idea of oblivion and nothingness; we don't mind 'killing ourselves softly', deep down, even if it takes 60 years to do so.

We knew a lot about the dangers of cigarettes back then. It was the 80s.

My sister! I still give her shit over it. She used to go for a cycle so she could smoke... she'd bring me with her so it wouldn't be obvious... she got me to start so I couldn't tell on her

Mark - stop smoking or i'll come over there and beat you silly.

Helen - 9? Holy Christ! Was this because you were the most sober one in the pub and had to drive everyone home too?
I love to turn you on

smoking instantly increases heart rate and raises blood pressure. those of us who have smoked much longer than we have cared to probably dont even notice anymore.

    from wikapedia..
"Inhalation of tobacco smoke causes several immediate responses within the heart and blood vessels. Within one minute the heart rate begins to rise, increasing by as much as 30 percent during the first 10 minutes of smoking."

that said, i am quitting today. no PJ shows, no holidays, no reasons not to. one gerb with the morning coffee for the last time....

    wish me luck.

:D well don't get me wrong, I come from the middle of the country... not really very much to do... but we were still quite innocent for the most part. I probably didn't even know what a condom WAS. But yep, seriously 9!

My only point is that to say I am ridiculous for taking up smoking, despite yourself having been a smoking 9 year old, is very hypocritical. And you tried to use the excuse that we just didn't have the health information back then. Now you're saying you just 'didn't give a fuck'. Which is it?

You give a fuck about health warnings now, obviously. Why don't you give up?

I think the point Helen is making is that a 9 year old is less likely to consider the dangers or the warnings, not that they actually 'don't give a fuck'. You have to admit it's very unusual for anyone over the age of say 13 or 14 to take up smoking, I'm sure that's the only point anyone is making Mark.
    I came, I saw, I concurred.....

I have no idea how old anyone is when they start smoking... I did no research into it before I started. I know no teenage smokers, personally, and certainly no 9 year olds who've smoked.

I started because it was the only thing that relaxed me during the hardest time of my life so far... nothing to do with it being 'cool' or 'not cool'. Anyone who does anything for that reason is the village idiot.

Sure 9 is very young, most people I know started when they were between 13 and 16. I did no research either :p just from my own memory, we all tried it at comprehensive school, some took to it, some didn't, I mean to me it's not an easy thing to become addicted to because it tastes so bloody awful...I mean you have to work hard at first I'm sure. It's not eating donuts is it? That would be easy to become addicted to :)

I think I would seriously die if I saw a 9 yr old smoking.
The sight of a pregnant woman smoking is bad enough.
And yes, a 9 yr old cannot seriously be held responsible for caring about the health warnings that come with smoking, now or then.

I was raised by a Conservative Christian family... I didn't try any mind-altering substances except for the Holy Spirit.

And yes, cigarettes are disgusting. I went through a few before deciding that nope, it wasn't just a bad choice of brand.... it was a bad choice of dirty habit. :p

Here you go, I did some research :p
As I suspected, it says 90% of smokers start in their teens.

It's Not Easy to Kick Butt : No matter what age people start smoking - and nearly 90% of adult smokers start while they are still teens - they never intend to get hooked. They may start by bumming a cigarette or two from a friend at a party, and then go on to buying an occasional pack. Soon they realize that they can't go without that pack. They've gotten used to reaching for a cigarette first thing in the morning, after meals, or during any stressful time. They are addicted, both physically and psychologically.
