My nan started smoking at 21. Thats what happens when you wave your new husband off to war.

I do, yes... but people of all ages do stupid things under stress.

I guess that was late for that generation, but let's not forget whatever we say, the health warnings were just not widely accepted back then, ciggarettes were advertised, and glamourised in movies..it was certainly looked upon as being 'cool', a little bit like we may wear a pair of fashionable sunglasses, out grandparent puffed a cig.
These days....well, I can't help think anyone taking it up now isn't a little crazy :o I'm glad to hear Mark has kicked it.
    I came, I saw, I concurred.....

Well stress needs to be relieved Mark, sure I understand, and good for you that you've realised you don't need them.

I don't think anyones arguing differently. Just that we all do many things that we know are bad for us, and for many different reasons. Drinking, smoking, drugs, crappy food etc. We all know the dangers of all of these, yet you can't honestly say you've done none of these recently :)

I think the point Helen is making is that a 9 year old is less likely to consider the dangers or the warnings, not that they actually 'don't give a fuck'. You have to admit it's very unusual for anyone over the age of say 13 or 14 to take up smoking, I'm sure that's the only point anyone is making Mark.
Thanks Jamie... that IS what I was trying to say. When you're young you think you're invincible... and ya don't really think these health warnings apply to you cos ya don't even think you're ever gonna get older anyway. As you get older you start to see the effects on other people and on yourself... which is why I don't understand how AN ADULT would start something like this. I'm sorry it's not what you want to hear Mark, but it's the truth.

You don't have to understand it. No one's asking you to. And without sounding like I'm throwing the toys out the pram, no one asked you to state the obvious. It's fucking high-and-mighty and patronising. Leave it alone.

And stop drinking, because it is killing you. I know it's not what you want to hear, but it's the truth.

Thing is... I know and accept it's the truth. If I do something stupid I can accept that... I don't get all annoyed with people who point that out to me... and DEBATE the fact

I'd 'accepted that' I was stupid for smoking when I started the thread, before you decided you were having fun pointing it out to me, just in case I didn't get it. I quit two days ago, for fuck's sake.

I wanted to debate the extent to which cigarettes cause anxiety, which is a debatable subject and an interesting one. You haven't contributed to that discussion. I didn't start the thread to debate how stupid Mark is for smoking. Only twats have been doing that.

Did you just call me a twat?

I'm out! Wow, you don't want people to point out the obvious, don't STATE the obvious... some people just never learn I spose! And I wasn't pointing it out cos I was having fun. I just say things as I see them... I apologise sincerely if you have issues with that

That depends. Are you relentlessly going on about how stupid and juvenile I am? If not, I have misintepreted you. If however you admit to repeatedly telling me how stupid I am, then yes, I don't mind admitting I have retaliated. I don't like people who tell other people they are better than them, whether blatantly or inadvertently.

Oh and I called your ACTIONS stupid... which you agreed in your last post. Not YOU!

I never insinuated I was better than you... I'm using MY mistake as an example and to tell others why they shouldn't make the same mistake... how is that 'blatantly or inadvertently' calling you stupid?

Mildly relatead, good job on the two day quit (so far). Keep it up.
I smoked for ~12 years and quit cold turkey, no problem. It can be done. (I moved and went back to school, complete change of environment made quitting easy).
  • Oh and I called your ACTIONS stupid... which you agreed in your last post. Not YOU!

I don't like to spend my life agreeing with people who criticise my actions. Neither do you. Neither does anyone.

I'd rather admit to doing a stupid thing and wanting to give up myself, before they have the chance to enjoy their own voice that much....

which is exactly what I did.

'Ya know, these cigarettes are really fucking with my health, I'm gonna give up.'

'Yeah, you're being really really stupid for doing that. They fuck with your health. How do you not know that?'

'I do know that. And I also know it's stupid. Anyway, I gave up 2 days ago.'

'I mean how could you be so stupid? No adult is that stupid! I was 9, I was stupid, but you're an adult. By the way they fuck with your health.'

'I gave up 2 days ago.'

'You realise how stupid that is?'

'I gave up 2 days ago.'

    It's repetitive isn't it.

SAD... here's how it started. Hmm... I called MYSELF stupid! Get over it!
Why the HELL would anyone take up smoking in this day and age???

*shakes head* mark mark mark! :o

It's stupid enough that I STILL smoke... but I've got the already stupid excuse that I'm addicted. I don't care if you want to hear it or not... just fucking quit now!

This was my second post... I still didn't call you stupid. Ah fuck it, I'm sure you're capable of going back through the thread yourself :)
In this day and age... everyone knows the dangers.

And yep, listen to the addicted smokers, we're the ones who wish we'd never started... don't ya think that makes sense? I started when I was 9... sure I'd heard about the risks... but it was the cool thing to do  IMO there's no other reason for someone to want to start. I can't believe you're even debating this.

and actually mark, I can't find ONE post where I called you stupid

Does your second post mean that the only reason to want to start is that it's the cool thing to do?
    ;)

What on earth did you think I was debating? I was debating nothing at all except for cigarette-induced anxiety which actually makes your misinterpretation of my thread, 'stupid'. Again, I was not debating whether Mark was a stupid little boy for smoking 'at your age'.. but that's exactly what you decided to do. It was unnecessary, irrelevant and most certainly uncalled for.
