I think I posted several options for you and I don't think at any point I was rude. If you're feeling put upon then I'd suggest that's your problem.I have certain rules I live by ... My First Rule ... I don't believe anything the government tells me ... George Carlin

No worries.
I wasn't having a go at you, I was just surprised to find the exact same picture is all. It's a difficult animal to identify and you're right, they don't give you any information on that wildlife park site. It's not a very good site really.NOPE!!!

well if you look at the picture's file name it says something to the effect of wildlife_agouti.jpg so although I do not know what an agouti is I am going to agree with others on here and guess that it is an agouti0

beemster wrote:the best i can tell is its an agouti, and i believe someone mentioned that earlier, however this seems much larger than the agouti i saw in other pics. I am going to california in march and plan a visit to the san diego zoo so i will bring the pic and get confirmation, someone there will know for sure, lol, or i would think.
The coloring doesn't seem right for the agouti either does it? I'm just trawling the Melbourne Zoo website now because I seem to remember seeing a similar creature there but that was a while ago. I wish I could remember the name! That would help!
That's what we need! A zoologist!I'd love to visit San Diego zoo, I'm sure someone there will know what it is.
NOPE!!!

I have no idea, but would be interesting to see it move around since it looks like a reverse wheelbarrel with those sticks as front legs0

I remember seeing something similar at melbourne zoo aswell but it wasn't quite as ugly. I have pictures.0 -
Capybara?? No
Agouti??? Nope
It appears to be a Patagonian Cavy or Patagonian Hare or a Mara...all the same thing. It's not native to the island.

It does help to own the two volume set of "Walker's Mammals of the World"All the world will be your enemy, Prince with a thousand enemies, and whenever they catch you, they will kill you. oh good!I was starting to think I was dreaming or something!
The Zoo website isn't proving to be very helpful. I guess whatever it is, they either don't have them anymore or they're not the "stars" of the show!NOPE!!!

tybird wrote:That's it....most the size and shape of the ears...the front legs also are a good field mark.
yes, the agouti wasn't doing it for me because of the size and the coloring and the shape of the head.
and the capybara is a little too boofy.
those cavy's are sleeker, more refined looking features I guess.
mostly I'm just glad you found it coz it was going to drive me nuts!NOPE!!!

tybird wrote:It's called a hare, that is correct. However, it is from the Order Rodentia not Lagomorpha...so it is more closely related to both the capybara and the agouti than to "true" hares or rabbits.
well I find it interesting that you say "true" hares. some "hares" look pretty similar to bunnies. some, like this one, are really big and scary looking. when I think "hare" i tend to think of the later. like the first photo I posted. that guy is scary!0 -
