This was taken by my cousin in Barbados, I can not seem to find the name of this animal. Jammers seem to be smart people, anyone know? It looks like a cross between a deer and a rabbit.

  • I think it's a Hare (with a pig nose,jk). It definitely has front legs like certain species of Hare. Hares usually have very large ears though. Maybe this is a species variation or a baby that's ears haven't grown yet.

it's very interesting. I may have to spend some time on this.

maybe a deer mated with a rabbit!
  • yeah ok, I definitely think it's a type of Hare. Here are some examples of various types:

biodiversity at it's finest. I love the top one, the artic hare.

I don't think that picture corresponds to the reference to agoutis. if you do a google image search, agoutis seem to be really small little rodents.
  • I have seen one of those before here is a quick vid of it...

You're quite right, I did take that pic from that site because it was a better pic than my cousins, but i did not see a name attached the the animal. So why post a reply if you're going to ignorant and useless.

    Are you right there sport?

I think I posted several options for you and I don't think at any point I was rude. If you're feeling put upon then I'd suggest that's your problem.

    No worries. :)

I wasn't having a go at you, I was just surprised to find the exact same picture is all. It's a difficult animal to identify and you're right, they don't give you any information on that wildlife park site. It's not a very good site really.

the best i can tell is its an agouti, and i believe someone mentioned that earlier, however this seems much larger than the agouti i saw in other pics. I am going to california in march and plan a visit to the san diego zoo so i will bring the pic and get confirmation, someone there will know for sure, lol, or i would think.

well if you look at the picture's file name it says something to the effect of wildlife_agouti.jpg so although I do not know what an agouti is I am going to agree with others on here and guess that it is an agouti

The coloring doesn't seem right for the agouti either does it? I'm just trawling the Melbourne Zoo website now because I seem to remember seeing a similar creature there but that was a while ago. I wish I could remember the name! That would help! :o

That's what we need! A zoologist! :D I'd love to visit San Diego zoo, I'm sure someone there will know what it is. :)

  • I have no idea, but would be interesting to see it move around since it looks like a reverse wheelbarrel with those sticks as front legs

    Capybara?? No

    Agouti??? Nope

It appears to be a Patagonian Cavy or Patagonian Hare or a Mara...all the same thing. It's not native to the island.

This is an agouti....small animals they are:

    This is a Capybara:

It does help to own the two volume set of "Walker's Mammals of the World"

oh good! :D I was starting to think I was dreaming or something! :D

The Zoo website isn't proving to be very helpful. I guess whatever it is, they either don't have them anymore or they're not the "stars" of the show! :D
