it doesnt matter that then and than have entirely different meanings as i mentioned. that is not even in dispute. they sound similar to anyone who speaks the language, not just us aussies. who the fuck is talking about the 'original english' and exactly what is it you mean by that anyway? dont you dare patronise me. if youre astounded by supposed laziness of some english speakers, that then i surely wish to play poker with you mark. i 'm astounded that anyone can refuse to take into account pronunciation. anyhoo fact is this happens so get over it.
I don't think I ever patronised you and I find it patronising that you ever thought I did. 'We're learning songs for baby Jesus' birthday. His mum and dad were Merry and Joseph. He had a bed made of clay and the three kings bought him Gold, Frankenstein and Merv as presents.' 'We're learning songs for baby Jesus' birthday. His mum and dad were Merry and Joseph. I love how people get all snarky with each other but in an effort to make it acceptable, they include a bunch of winking/smiling emoticons.
I sent a text message to the white house saying I was going to lop off the head of our president, but I included an emoticon with its tongue hanging out, so I'm sure they'll all have a big laugh.Idaho's Premier Outdoor Writer

Probably because people don't want to fall out over something like the usage of words 'then' and 'than'.0

This is very true. There's a delightfully chilly thread about Sigur Ros in Other Music in which I may have used copious amounts of emoticons to say to the other person "I like you but this is like headbutting a wall covered in spikes". "I remember one night at Muzdalifa with nothing but the sky overhead, I lay awake amid sleeping Muslim brothers and I learned that pilgrims from every land — every colour, and class, and rank; high officials and the beggar alike — all snored in the same language"0 This is very true. And obviously, no reason they should in this case. It's just that when I want to get snarky with someone, I get fuckin' snarky. I don't insult someone and then act like I wasn't trying to...Idaho's Premier Outdoor Writer

I'm not even sure where I picked up "snarky". In fact, I just started using it today... It must be short for behavior resembling that of a snotty shark.Idaho's Premier Outdoor Writer

see? a perfect example of the evolution of the language and the appropriation of words from 'other' places.. youre using a word you dont even know the origin of and in doing so you hope you are using it in its proper context. but youre not quite sure. yet that doesnt stop you from using it does it? you use it cause it sounds right, no? hear my name hear my name

That's great. Honest people are cool. Although I'm not sure anyone here was trying to insult.0

but then and than DON'T sound right. If someone said to you 'we'll meet up there, than' you'd think 'huh'?0

actually no... id understand what they were saying cause i would be putting the whole sentence into context. i might pick up on the incorrect pronunciation but that wouldnt stop me from understanding what they were saying.hear my name

I feel really stupid..I totally misinterpreted this thread. I know I probably mix up then and than sometimes. This is a message board...I don't think it's the end of the world. It matters in professional writing. My opinion about this grammar issue on here. These cuts are leaving creases. Trace the scars to fit the pieces, to tell the story, you don't need to say a word.0

yeah, I understand what you're saying there.
It's just a real pet peeve because it is SO wrong. It makes absolutely no sense at all, whatever excuse you can try to use. 0 0

How has this lasted 6 pages?
The same argument has been made on both sides over and over.
Can we not just say that some of us are more anal than others? This is going nowhere "I remember one night at Muzdalifa with nothing but the sky overhead, I lay awake amid sleeping Muslim brothers and I learned that pilgrims from every land — every colour, and class, and rank; high officials and the beggar alike — all snored in the same language"0 "I remember one night at Muzdalifa with nothing but the sky overhead, I lay awake amid sleeping Muslim brothers and I learned that pilgrims from every land — every colour, and class, and rank; high officials and the beggar alike — all snored in the same language"0

my pet peeve aside from incorrect spelling is people not being able to acknowledge that shit happens and thats just the way it is. what is SO wrong is extreme poverty and the continuing human rights abuses around the world. mixing up two similiar sounding (but differently spelt and meaning) words is nothing in the grand scheme of things. as is the fact that your 5/6 year old can easily distinguish between these two words. but then again so is incorrect spelling. hear my name hear my name
