Anaheim fans are the most fairweather fans in baseball. They were a laughingstock for years (decades?) until they won the World Series in 2002. Since then loads of "fans" have jumped on the bandwagon.

Check out their attendance figures before/after 2002:

    1997: 1,767,330
    1998: 2,519,280
    1999: 2,253,040
    2000: 2,066,982
    2001: 2,001,319
    2002: 2,305,565

    2003: 3,061,094
    2004: 3,375,677
    2005: 3,404,686
    2006: 3,406,790
    2007 :3,365,632

By contrast, the Dodgers hadn't won a playoff SERIES since 1988 (until this year), and have suffered through many terrible seasons, but their attendance has stayed high and consistent nonetheless:

    1997: 3,319,504
    1998: 3,089,222
    1999: 3,098,042
    2000: 2,880,242
    2001: 3,017,143
    2002: 3,131,077
    2003: 3,138,626
    2004: 3,488,283
    2005: 3,603,680
    2006: 3,758,421
    2007: 3,856,753

Drawing 3 million+ fans in 10 out of 11 years despite a consistently unsuccessful team? That alone proves that Dodgers fans are NOT fairweather.

And don't give me that "the weather is beautiful" business to explain why the Dodgers draw so many fans. Sit for an hour on any SoCal freeway and you'll know what an absolute sacrifice it is to even get to the stadium for a game.

You speak the truth. Say what you want about Dodgers fans and Lakers fans not getting to games on time, fine. But fair weather? This is someone who doesn't know Dodger and Laker fans.

Now...to the topic at hand... Game 1 tonight!

I have that feeling in my gut right now that's a weird mixture of excitement, fear, anxiety, and elation...

    My prediction: 5-4, Dodgers.

We lost game 1, but showed that we are actually the better team, I think. An error and a couple bombs were all the Phillies did all night long, and we almost beat them with their only dominant pitcher on the mound.

Meanwhile, we got incredibly unlucky on Manny's first inning double (would have been a homer a few inches higher or to the right), and we smoked a couple balls that ended up as outs.

Tonight we have our BEST pitcher going up against a Phillies pitcher who is a huge step down from Hamels. If we take game 2 we take home field advantage and the momentum in the series.

    Go Dodgers!

A win is a win is a win. But seriously, keep coming with the excuses - I love it. Oh, and your BEST pitcher has a 4.50 ERA against the Phils this year and they're hitting .304 off of him. While the huge step down from Hamels has an ERA of 1.93 against LA and they're hitting .259 off of him. Stats are stats are stats. And again, this is war.

Nice of you to join us over here in the LA Dodgers thread. You converting to a Dodger fan?

Close game 1. Lowe made a couple mistakes and paid for it. I think that was Hamels game to lose, no matter how you slice it. The pressure was on the Phillies to win that game and they held serve. Now we'll see about game 2. If the Dodgers steal it, I like our chances.

I'm not coming up with "excuses," just analyzing the game.

An excuse would be something like blaming the game on the umpires or on the weather.

You're right, this is war, and the Phillies deserve credit for finding a way to win game 1. Game 2 is going to be HUGE -- either the Phils go to LA with a comfortable 2-0 advantage or LA has the home field and momentum in a 1-1 series.

That being said, I fully expect the Dodgers to win tonight.

Yeah. Although it is not a "must" win, I think it is almost a must win tonight. Winning game 2 would be enormous. Losing game 2 would really put the pressure on us to win all 3 at home.

Loosely translated, you could describe that look this way: "This park is a joke."

He'd just watched a game-tying, two-run, Chase Utley home run come down in the third row of the right-field lower deck. He'd just watched what turned out to be a game-winning homer by Pat Burrell return to earth in the second row of the left-field lower deck.

And nobody had to get out a site map to explain to Derek Lowe -- or anyone in a Dodgers uniform -- that if they had been playing baseball in L.A. instead of Philadelphia, those mighty blows would not have been home runs on anybody's scorecard."

I'm sure he already knew this. I think his point was that if we go down 2-0, we almost *have* to win all 3 at home, because going back to Philly needing to win both games 6 AND 7 would be a huge challenge.

If I was a fan I'd rather be tied 1-1 going home for three then be down 0-2. You know in that case, of 0-2, you have to go back to Philly. Stealing home field would be huge for the Dodgers.

I'm sure he already knew this. I think his point was that if we go down 2-0, we almost *have* to win all 3 at home, because going back to Philly needing to win both games 6 AND 7 would be a huge challenge.

Exactly. You want to steal one in Philly.

Nice job Manny with that hustle in the first inning.

Manny would not have gotten a triple if he had run faster. Don't buy into the Tim McCarver crap. He hates Manny Ramirez. Say what you want about Manny, but he knows he's standing on 2nd if he jogs on that.
