Will this movie inspire people to do as Chris did, and just take off.
I must say the movie is one of the most inspiring I have ever seen, and although he made mistakes, it made me want to set off Into the Wild!!

it was a very inspiring movie, but i think i would be too scared to live in the wild by myself.0 -

I think some people will try it, because the film, more so than the book, glorifies Chris's journey. He has a very romantic philosophy and people will respond to that. They already have; there's no question there. BUT will they go to the same drastic measures, after seeing the mistakes Chris made and the tragic consequences? Maybe not.
Personally, I don't know about "the wild", but yeah, I would love to just take off someday with no plans or destination in mind...but I wouldn't distance myself from my family or burn my wallet, and I don't think it would be as permanent as Chris intended his own journey to be. I wouldn't take as many risks, but I'd love to do something really spontaneous for once in my life, and yes, the film, book and Alexander Supertramp himself have inspired me.
Although I'm probably too chickenshit to ever follow through.
The most spontaneous thing I think I could ever convince myself to do would be to travel around next tour season, which I haven't yet had the opportunity to do, what with school and everything. 2003: Toronto

made me think a lot, but not about leaving.
I am fine where I am0 -
I just read the book and watched the movie...... he was very unprepared for what he did, but he followed his dreams and took risks. Very good movie. Even better book. I felt sorry for his sister, that he didnt contact her at all.. that he kind of left her behind... If he hadn't of ate that.... if he had of just read the book more correctly he would most likely be alive today. After all, he did survive for 16 weeks on his own with out any human contact.
RIP Chris.0 -

No...just login at your nearest tree stump.Progress is not made by everyone joining some new fad,

I thought about this question whilst reading the book. I reckon some people out there will definitely go off and do the same thing now. I don't think they'll go without a map though.0 -

I agree!! No kidding.. go out and live where you want and be true to yourself, but honestly I think there's a special place in hell for people who deliberately cause their families pain like that."If you're looking for someone to pull you out of that ditch, you're out of luck."0 -
I love the idea of living in the wilderness....but his mistake was not taking a few people with him. One key to long term wilderness survival is being part of a group. It is possible, but if you are alone, you will eventually make a mistake, like he did, which turned out to be a fatal mistake.0

agreed.
i love nature and i LOVE travel, but neither to such an extent that i would want to be utterly alone......and i ADORE being alone. however, also LOVe my husband, and people in general, far TOO much to be outside civilization for long.
besides, while i thought it a brilliant movie, i personally cannot imagine it truly 'inspiring' anyone to any such thing. sure, to follow your drems and goals, to travel, to experience nature and such, etc....sure. but to do so completely solo, and so unprepared? nah, don't think so. i mean hell, even chris realized 'happiness only exists when shared'....so to me, BIG important lesson right there for anyone paying attention.Stay with me...
Let's just breathe...
I am myself like you somehow0 -
I would definitely go out and explore this country, maybe not permanently like Chris did. I have often thought about just taking sometime off, maybe a few months, and just galavanting across the country, in my own car. Seeing all the sights this country has to offer, but in the end I would return home to my family and friends because that is where my heart lies."When one gets in bed with government, one must expect the diseases it spreads." - Ron Paul0
