NJ flu-shot mandate for preschoolers draws outcry
As flu season approaches, many New Jersey parents are furious over a first-in-the-nation requirement that children get a flu shot in order to attend preschools and day-care centers. The decision should be the parents', not the state's, they contend.
Hundreds of parents and other activists rallied outside the New Jersey Statehouse on Thursday, decrying the policy and voicing support for a bill that would allow parents to opt out of mandatory vaccinations for their children.
"This is not an anti-vaccine rally — it's a freedom of choice rally," said one of the organizers, Louise Habakus. "This one-size-fits-all approach is really very anti-American."
New Jersey's policy was approved last December by the state's Public Health Council and is taking effect this fall. Children from 6 months to 5 years old who attend a child-care center or preschool have until Dec. 31 to receive the flu vaccine, along with a pneumococcal vaccine.

I'm sort of torn on this one. In one way you do have a choice, if you don't want to vaccinate, then don't send your kids there, but i also see that is going to create huge problems for working families and the families are under enough stresses in everyday life without making things harder for them.
I work as a critical care paramedic and we have to vaccinate. No vaccination. No job. I guess i could always find another job...0 -
I don't know - it's for the benefit and the health of all these small children. I've never heard about mandatory vaccination against the flu; in my country there's a discussion about measles. A lot of parents here don't want their children to get a vaccination and I wish it was mandatory. So there would be no danger for infants who are still too young to get their shots. Ok, so parents wouldn't have a choice, but then you don't have a choice to smoke in a restaurant either, right? It's about everybodys health.0
-
Don't you already have to have a ton of vaccinations before most schools will let you enter kindergarten (polio and that sort of thing)? Why would a flu vaccine be any different. Plus PJ_Gurl is right, you have a choice, give your kid the shot, or find another place to send them to school, or home school them.0

No disrespect here, but those of you who support mandatory vaccination, might want to consider your freedoms and all those detention camps that have been built over the past 4 years.
What happens when all schools require? And what happens to parents who don't, once sovereignity is taken away from states?

there are already mandatory vaccines in place. i think with the flu vaccine, this year is the exception. my professor last spring doesnt believe much in the flu vaccine for college students and younger, he always spoke out against it. but he strongly urged everyone to get a flu vaccine this coming year. i guess the strain projected this year is supposed to be especially troublesome.0

wow, I find it crazy that parents don't have a choice and that they must have the shot...
the flu shot is not 100%...and if memory serves me right, last years shot did not protect from the strain of flu that was most prevalent last flu season....
I've only had one flu shot in my life, a few years ago, and it just so happened that winter I got the flu...since I've not gotten a shot, and I've not had the flu...0 -
the flu shot is kinda messed up ...
they have these scientists who try to predict what the strain is gonna be like for like 3 different strains for the season ... last year they botched it ... from what i know - if they get it right (which apparently they've done 14 of the last 17 years), you have a 70% effective rate ...
and the protein they inject you with essentially will give you flu like symptoms at the beginning even tho you don't actually have the flu ...
in any case - i haven't had a shot ever and i get sick maybe once every 3/4 years for a day or two ... so, i can live with that ... but i can see how a workplace or school would want to mandate it ... if the places get hit - it causes a huge trickle down effect ...0 -

I work with the elderly and I sort of had to get a flu shot just out of nervousness of getting sick and passing it on. Every time I've had a shot I've gotten sick so my boss paid for it. if I get sick this winter in Florida, this will be the last time I'll get a shot.
There should NEVER be any mandatory flu shot of any kind.

I had a scary conversation with my doctor on Monday. He asked if I wanted a flu shot and I said no. He thought that was o.k. He said that by the time the virus reached us it will more than likely have mutated anyway so the vaccine won't be effective. He said it might, but it might not. He said the more information he gets about viruses the more scared he gets. He said that people don't understand what can happen and that there is no way that he or any other doctor will be able to do anything if a serious virus becomes epidemic. He said it is probably good that the public doesn't understand the serious threats that are out there now. He said he doesn't even want to think about it because there would be nothing he could do about it anyway.
That was a rather unnerving conversation to say the least. The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way it treats its animals. Ghandi0 -
I don't know. I feel sort of sad that all of this coincides with Codex and what is happening. New Jersey is a state where some big-wig pharmi companies generate $. Is this mandate for the betterment of people or the betterment of an industry.
I have heard that the next move will be to take away free access to herbal rememdies too...It all reminds me of reefer madness, only different time and space...

I don't like this thread.

since school funding is partially based on attendence I'm sure this will become more of an issue nationally in years to come. So there's the money motive if anyone was looking for it.the Minions0

They wanted me to take in interfuron a while back...I chose not to...Riverrunner wrote:I had a scary conversation with my doctor on Monday. He asked if I wanted a flu shot and I said no. It's been over 3 years since I landed here and now I am working 40+ hours
and enhancing my life each day.
I asked an anatomy student, a nurse, here in my community about that treatment and my style of living. she said that the way interfuron affects the proteins in the body, i would never be the same immune wise...i am so glad i chose not to take that treatment....
i use herbal remedies....lots of vitamin b complex...milk thistle....ginseng....
off topic, but not so, because what all this boils down to is soon my right to treat my health will be out of my hands...all insanity:

For those of you who oppose this, could you please explain to me what the difference is between mandating this shot and all the other shots they mandate? Seriously... I'm not sure I completely understand.0

Maybe that they are unnecessary. I've never had a flu shot and never gotten the flu.
Plus the fact that the state is facing a 4 billion dollar deficit. It just seems like an unnecessary issue for the state to be involved in when they have much more pressing matters like trying not to go bankrupt.- Busted down the pretext

Yeah, I understand that argument about all the shots. But people aren't protesting mandatory shots as a whole, right? Aren't they just protesting this shot? That's what I don't understand.0 -

I didn't get a flu shot and did get the flu, so maybe they are necessary.

Interesting.... I hadn't thought of it as a monetary issue. Is it possible that they would end up spending even more money if the hospitals were inundated with sick kids?0
