Flu is spread most readily by children. It also hits them more than it does adults and kills them disproportionately more. To me, the flu shot is a no brainer. You care about your kids or your elderly parents and you don't want the family to be deathly sick with the flu and then complications for weeks? Get a flu shot. I remember having the flu repeatedly when I was a kid and my father almost dying, literally, from the complications of pneumonia. I also remember my last bout of flu about 14 years ago. I got it about one week after a flu shot (so it couldn't have been the flu shot). I began to have flu symptoms that then disappeared entirely within three days and were very mild--a low grade fever and body aches. I remember the last flu before that one, some 10 years prior to that. I couldn't get out of bed for over a week, had a fever of 103 degrees for days, wracking body aches, vomited my guts out repeatedly, etc., and then felt lousy for at least another week because of the toll the disease took on my body. Three easy days even when I did get the flu when not completely protected by immunity or two solid weeks + of misery? It's a no brainer. Unless you actually truly allergic to the ingredients in a flu shot, I think you are taking unnecessary risks with your health and the health of those you love if you don't get the shot.
Btw, I teach. I get a flu shot every year. During the time I've been teaching, I haven't had the flu once. My vaccinated students make it through school missing a couple of days for colds or other short-term mild illnesses. My unvaccinated kids, another story. They are typically out up to two weeks, sometimes not because they are still sick, but because a parent is now too sick with the flu to get them to school. That's a lot of learning missed that is quite often never really made up.
Your kids are your kids, so I definitely believe you should make whatever you think the best decision. After my daughter got the flu, she has asked to have flu shots every year. And she's gotten them.
Because... for one... it is further adding to the list of BS they tell you that you MUST do.... and secondly... all the other vaccinations are now thimerosol free. The flu vaccination isn't. It contains thimeresol which is about 50% mercury. AND... (i think) they are saying all children 6 months and up! That's just crazy.
Is that answering any of your question, my friend??
Yeah, I understand that argument about all the shots. But people aren't protesting mandatory shots as a whole, right? Aren't they just protesting this shot? That's what I don't understand.
I think this shot is part of all the other shots...
Some shots are good like anyother item...There's a purpose for their existence...
Polio, Diptheria, Tetnus, Small Pox etc. saved many lives....but a line should be drawn...
oops the batch was bad...great way to eliminate population....

i've never had a flu shot and have never had the flu. same with my wife. same with my mom. same with my kids. one of the guys i work with gets the flu shot every year and guess what...he gets the flu every year.

You people do realize that the general cough and cold and runny nose that you get that makes you feel unwell for a few days a year is not the flu right.

Ditto. I have also never had a flu shot and have never had the flu. A couple of years ago at my old job they were giving shots and everyone thought I was crazy for not going. Well guess what, I was the only one that didn't get sick.

i realize that. i never said my co-worker had a cold. every year, he gets the flu. do you think i'm making it out to be more than it is?
But do you not realize the bureaucrats, already tell you what to do. Most school districts require you to have a bunch of other vaccines like polio before you can start kindergarten. How is adding a flu shot any different than those?
because there are exemption forms for those shots but they are trying to do away with the exemption and make it mandatory!! no one is forcing that mercury laden poison shit on me or my child without my consent!!
it is also unconstitutional!!
but you're Canadian so you wouldn't know nothing about that!
i realize that. i never said my co-worker had a cold. every year, he gets the flu. do you think i'm making it out to be more than it is?
I'm saying, people talk about having the 'flu'. The flu is not the common cold that makes you feel really unwell for a few days. Some of the strains of the flu kill you.

9 times out of ten the flu shot you receive isn't even the strain that is going around and independent studies suggest that anyone who has had 10 or more flu shots increases their chances of Alzheimer's by tenfold!
mercury is not good for you...now repeat that 100x or until it sinks in.

Don't lecture me. I know all of that. My comment was purely asking the question of 'do people know what the flu actually is'. I see it all the time, people saying 'i've got the flu'. Uh, no you don't all have the flu, some of you have the common cold.

trust me, he doesn't get just a cold. it's the flu. every year.
hi, i just wanted to add my opinion here, i have 3 kids, one of them has asthma and can't afford to get the flu and the other two are in pre-k and it's mandatory so i have vaccinated all of them, but anyway....i wanted to tell you that pediatricians have the flu shot without mercury. just wanted to let u know that it is available mercury free for children.

Now I'm wondering if that changes anyone's mind....
I always get my flu shot, but for kids, I've never heard it mentioned. I think parents, on top of everything else, really need to do research to see if it's right for their family.
"I'd rather be with an animal." "Those that can be trusted can change their mind." "The in between is mine." "If I don't lose control, explore and not explode, a preternatural other plane with the power to maintain." "Yeh this is living." "Life is what you make it."

Is that the inhaled one?
I could have gotten one for free for my son...but i wasn't sure... and also he seemed like he had a little cough that day so i opted not to.
Thanks for that info though!!!
GREAT to know!
Although I'm still on the fence about it. Just finally got him the last of his "required" vaccines so I could be sure to send him to daycare. All these required vaccines scare the shit out of me. There is all sorts of info that the FDA advisory boards that are requiring all these shots have members on them that are high ranking employees of the very same pharmaceutical companies that are making the vaccines they are requiring our kids to get!!!! This link below appears to have some good info... although i haven't read it too thoroughly...I was looking for another and came upon this one instead....
For those of you who oppose this, could you please explain to me what the difference is between mandating this shot and all the other shots they mandate? Seriously... I'm not sure I completely understand.
For example they require the chicken pox vaccine for all 1st graders in my state. I did not want to give my son the vaccine just because I had read various things that it was not truly effective. In talking to his doctor, he said that Japan had used the vaccine for 30+ years and it he totally recommended it. So I said ok. I gave my son the chicken pox vaccine.
That summer, 6 months later he came down with chicken pox badly he was exposed from another child. What was the point of this vaccine? Why did I even make him go through getting the shot only to come down with it anyways??
A month later, the CDC came out and said now they recommend a booster to the 1st chicken pox shot because of a higher level of kids still getting the virus even after getting vaccinated.
With my younger son I opted out of the chicken pox vaccine. I am going to hope he gets it the old fashion way. Just like I did. My older sister came home from school with it, my mom sat all of us in the same room so we all had it together.
I do not get the flu shot, why would I want my children to get it. I do not believe in it. I am getting more and more freaked out with how many things they want to inject into us. And then I think of their little bodies and what is it really doing to them. I don't know. I still think people should have the choice.

you jeopardized your children s health albeit unknowingly like most parents who ignorantly trust big pharma and the lies about vaccinations...below is a link you should all check out and start educating yourselves about the truth to the dangers of vaccinations.
When I think of the most successful public health measures in human history, two things come to mind, sanitation and vaccinations. As parents, we innately want to protect our children from harm. It can be very difficult these days to differentiate between the pseudo-science and propaganda and scientifically confirmed data. There are a lot of web sites out there that promote deception and sometimes outright lies. I think it is important for all of us to get our information from reputable and expert sources, so we have the correct and scientifically verified information we need to make informed decisions for ourselves and our children. The following are a few sites from reputable organizations such as the CDC, World Health Organization (WHO), American Medical Association, American Academy of Pediatrics, & the Institute of Medicine, among others. These sites are a good starting point to get what you need to make informed choices.
*as mentioned by a few posters in this thread, thimerosal has been phased out of childhood vaccinations with the exception of the Flu vaccine; however, one can request a thimerosal-free flu shot.

i get a shot every yr at work it really works for me at least haven't had the flu since i started getting them ,but children that is a whole other can of worms i don't get them the shot ,my wife the nurse says maybe thei yr we will ,i have a 14yr old & 11yr old ...
If I don't get the flu shot I get the flu and it lasts weeks to months. It's a miserable experience, and I wouldn't wish it on anyone. I used to work in a childcare and those kids would get sick for a long time, too. The kids would have to get the antibiotics, parents have to take off work because kids are too sick; or they don't take off work, and the kids just infect everyone else. My sister and our friend do not take their kids for vaccinations, and those kids ALWAYS end up with the flu with a couple rounds of antiobiotics in the least as a result. All the time spent with doctors visits, all the time they have to stay home and worry, why didn't they just give their kids the shot? How many times does the flu turn into pneumonia for their children before they realize the flu shot is their best option to combat this annual misery. It's not rocket science.
I don't believe the "well, this vaccine may not work for this particular strain" stuff. I ride public transportation, have easy access to the flu bug, and if I get a flu shot I don't get the flu. Simple preventive medicine, saves money and I don't need to take sick days off. I hated, absolutely hated shots (get scared etc) for most of my life, but I look forward to the flu shot because I can see results.
I agree that although US has other vaccinations, maybe a new mandated one is not the best even though attendance would probably be better for both parents and kids, antibiotics costs would be lower etc etc. However, I think there should be strong messages, and easy access to get a flu shot.
On an annual basis, I usually read a scare about lack of flu vaccine available. When I read that the vaccine is almost out, and many people haven't received the shot I wonder who is in charge and why?

This doesn't seem possible. Maybe he needs an extended vacation every year. Also, to be kind to him, maybe he doesn't know what the flu is. A lot of people say they have the flu when what they have is a bad cold. If everyone who says they had the flu had the flu, we'd be in a constant pandemic.
