    I think a lot of people CAN and DO help themselves.

    I'm ok with paying taxes...but a higher % for those that make more $ is extremely redundant to me.

    but no one is asking (or in your case demanding) that your taxes be raised. not one person. you seem to have it stuck in your head that taxes have to be raised. they dont.

    I wouldn't mind paying higher taxes IF I knew it was going to help the less fortunate. But because most it is probably lost in bureacracy, I'd rather be taxed at a lower rate and give more to the causes of my choice.

    a tax increase for your mom can be crippling. go ask her if she would gladly have her tax rate go to 40%, 50%, how bout 60%?

    she will be making almost the same as you. yup that sounds fair.

    What the hell are you talking about? Buffet doesn't complain about high taxes. He's an advocate of higher tax rates for the wealthy.

    Not all wealthy people are greedy. Just the ones who complain about needing to give a higher percentage of their income to the government.

    exactly. gates, buffet, rockefeller, the list goes on. these man certainly didn't have to donate any of their fortunes to help those in need, but they realized they had the ability to and did. i think its nice that their money went towards philanthropic efforts instead of to the government.

    I understand your point, but you know they will just go out and get a good "taxman" to help get a lot of that back come tax return time. It's not like that 40% is gone forever for them. There are many loopholes in this crazy assed system we have here. I've spoken with a handful of people in that higher bracket who've told me as such. I'd love to be there myself some day, and if I were, I'm sure I'd want to find an honest way to pay the least amount of taxes possible, too.

    Why is that greedy? What is "rich"? What % is fair for a fmaily making $175,000? How about $75,000?

    That would be great if every wealthy person did that. But not all of them do. A higher tax would mandate it.

    And yes, an indeterminate amount would be wasted. That's a downside for sure. But it doesn't outweigh the positives.

    There are ways to do it without an absolute higher tax - like maybe a better tax break system for those who give more. Basically figure out a way to keep it out of the government's bank account so they can't spend it on military or something they aren't supposed to spend it on (like how they destroyed Social Security).
