Because you are already taxing the person on the stocks. Why not just tax those richer than you for breathing?? It seems all you want to do is devise a system where you pay little or no tax and others pay your share and way. Why not just hike the tax rate on capital gains? Why make it more complicated?
And by making a transaction tax you will be taxing the middle class and the working poor as well. You will be taxing peoples 401K. You will be taxing those trying to rise out of being caught in the pay check to pay check working poor cycle who realize that making investments is one of the best ways out of that working poor cycle.

Bill Clinton, a very wealthy man, is more than willing to pay higher taxes as he famously said.
It's based on a simple principle - you have more, you give more. Is it fair? Not really, per se. But it's the right thing to do. The upper class should recognize that they have a responsibility to share some of their wealth because they can afford to do so.
Boohoo, it's not fair. Poor people deserve to be poor, so you guys don't have to help them, right?
I call bullshit.

Boohoo, it's not fair. Rich people don't deserve to be rich, so they should have to help or be criminals. This basically what you're saying. Saying this as you type away at a computer. How would you like it if a law was passed making you a criminal for being able to afford a computer while there are those without healthcare. When will your responsibility to the poor kick in?

holy shit. It boggles my mind that people think like this. I dont even know how to respond. and i'm rarely left speechless.

An idea.
But this seems less complicated to me. Its a sales tax, fairly straightforward. I dont' see why that should get you out of paying the income tax.

Well...if Bill Clinton says so I'm convinced.
A "Rich person" paying the same % is still paying WAY more taxes...why should it be more?
A "Rich person" paying the same % is still paying WAY more taxes...why should it be more?
Because they can afford more. The benefits that an increased tax rate on the wealthy has for other people far outweighs the negatives for the person being taxed.

openly admitting taxes on himself are unfair but fair for others.
Because I make less then 40 K. Im fresh out of school and working my way up.
Any increase to my taxes could be financially crippling.
My mom makes 96K a year. If she gets a slight increase in her taxes its not crippling.
Why is that so hard for people to grasp???

Why? Because your greed and lust for wealth outweigh your desire to help those who can't help themselves?
I will gladly help others, and I do. you know nothing about me. and tell this nonsense to bill gates and warren buffet. the 2 RICHEST people on earth. have you seen what their "greed" has created?
its amazing how you call people greedy when that is exactly what you are only 100 times worse.
you really don't get it. pull up a chair, there are plenty around here who will help you understand .

but no one is asking (or in your case demanding) that your taxes be raised. not one person. you seem to have it stuck in your head that taxes have to be raised. they dont.
Please expand on this responsibility the rich have. Where does this responsibility come from?
The responsibility comes from the fact that you're a human being and should be willing to make relatively minor sacrifices for people who need it more than you do.
I wouldn't mind paying higher taxes IF I knew it was going to help the less fortunate. But because most it is probably lost in bureacracy, I'd rather be taxed at a lower rate and give more to the causes of my choice.

Likewise.
a tax increase for your mom can be crippling. go ask her if she would gladly have her tax rate go to 40%, 50%, how bout 60%?
she will be making almost the same as you. yup that sounds fair.

What the hell are you talking about? Buffet doesn't complain about high taxes. He's an advocate of higher tax rates for the wealthy.
Not all wealthy people are greedy. Just the ones who complain about needing to give a higher percentage of their income to the government.

exactly. gates, buffet, rockefeller, the list goes on. these man certainly didn't have to donate any of their fortunes to help those in need, but they realized they had the ability to and did. i think its nice that their money went towards philanthropic efforts instead of to the government.
I'm not talking about multi millionaires fellas. the highest tax rate starts at like 350k I believe? at like 40% of income?? and even lower then that, like 100k a year get taxed at 35%. and you wantt o increase that? no thanks. It took alot of hard work to get where im at and I dont want to continue to work harder and move up only to have to give it back.
not every wealthy person makes as much as Arod and buffet.
I understand your point, but you know they will just go out and get a good "taxman" to help get a lot of that back come tax return time. It's not like that 40% is gone forever for them. There are many loopholes in this crazy assed system we have here. I've spoken with a handful of people in that higher bracket who've told me as such. I'd love to be there myself some day, and if I were, I'm sure I'd want to find an honest way to pay the least amount of taxes possible, too.
The responsibility comes from the fact that you're a human being and should be willing to make relatively minor sacrifices for people who need it more than you do.
I really really need $1,000. Please live up to your human responsibility and give it to me. I'm okay if you have to sell your computer and other possessions in order to get the $1,000. I just want to make sure that you understand this responsibility you have and do the human thing and live up to it. I don't want you to be a bad person.

That would be great if every wealthy person did that. But not all of them do. A higher tax would mandate it.
And yes, an indeterminate amount would be wasted. That's a downside for sure. But it doesn't outweigh the positives.

There are ways to do it without an absolute higher tax - like maybe a better tax break system for those who give more. Basically figure out a way to keep it out of the government's bank account so they can't spend it on military or something they aren't supposed to spend it on (like how they destroyed Social Security).

I think a lot of people CAN and DO help themselves.

Not to mention it stifles hard work. Where's the incentive to better oneself when you can sit back and allow others to take care of all your needs?

Why is that greedy? What is "rich"? What % is fair for a fmaily making $175,000? How about $75,000?
I'll have to work on that... sorry.

I don't have $1,000 either. The people who want to raise taxes sure think I do though.
Hell, it's been admitted in this thread that wealthy is anyone who makes more money than oneself.
