I think it's intolerant and ignorant to say that islamic culture is generally extremely oppressive for women. You know/have been in contact with Islamic culture? While I'll agree cultures found in some countries are extremely oppressive, to generalize it to all the regions is wrong. People end up confusing ponctual wrongs with a whole culture and start ostracising it. the final stage being to agree that marrying any muslim man is a bad idea.0 -

You may not find the oppression of women in the text or teachings, but to continue to claim it doesn't exist as a cultural practice in places like Iran, Jordan, Afghanistan, Nigeria, etc..., etc... is to turn a blind eye to what is happening. I could provide you with probably hundreds of links to reports, stories, examples of the way women are oppressed in Islam, but I'm sure you'd find a reason not to acknowledge that it happens.
no actually, I think you're the one confusing it. I'm talking about the actual religion Islam, not the way some countries may incorporate it into their judicial system or whatever. Women may be oppressed, but Islam doesn't oppress women, the countries do. you probably couldn't provide me with links on how Islam oppresses women, you'd just provide links to countries oppressing women which aren't the same thing.
I'm talking about Islam right now. The actual religion. Where in the quran or anything does Islam oppress women?0 -

First any religion is not just what is written down on some scrapes of paper from a couple thousand years ago...it is how it is practiced TODAY, unfortuantly for Islam, a fine religion, it has been twisted by a majority of its OUTSPOKEN followers. Muslims the world over need to stand and REJECT the people that corrupt their religion, not sit by scared they will be labeled "a bad muslim" if they do. If you say Islam doesnt have any opression of women you are a fool, if in the year 1095 I said the Catholic Church didnt support the murder of muslims I would be a fool. I havent read the quaran, no I cannot pull out some string of words that says its ok to oppress women. I can also point out that by your logic , Judaism and Christianity also do not opress women....as the Islamic holy books include the Torah, Pslams and the New Testiment...(though some what Corrupt) at least according to "Islam" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kutub

Just saying, it's the same line of thought really.
Trusting your preconceptions as opposed to the evidence that lies before you.
But no matter, ignore me, I'm just annoyed by the abuse of the word "heart".
There are only two times I would feel my heart, when it's accelerated, and when I'm experiencing a heart-attack.I necessarily have the passion for writing this, and you have the passion for condemning me; both of us are equally fools, equally the toys of destiny. Thanks for explaining your rolleyes. I see what you mean about it being redundant.
I was talking about that "gut feeling" thing that seems to happen at times, but am sure the evidence is there for me to see since that thought of feeling is triggered by what I have leanred or observed in the past. Usually, I try to to be crabby at people on the board. It was more the expression with no explantion."Speak your mind even if your voice shakes" ~ M Kuhn0 -

Yeah, while that is true, "unfortunately for Islam" shows that people do practice it wrong and Islam's accusation of "oppressing women" shouldn't be based on a couple of muslims. Every race always oppresses women, and it doesn't have to do with what religion they are, just what kind of person they are. Jews and Christians do oppress women, but my point was, as far as I know, the religion doesn't.
Thanks for the compliment. Your sig is cool too, 1984 is a great book.0
