I didn't know god was american. Come to think of it, it might explain a few things.
My last visit to the US only covered southern california, but some of the highlights were:
Death Valley
the Sierra Nevadas (The mountains, not the beer. That stuff was terrible)
squirels
chipmunks
rattlesnakes
coyotes
Being able to stand in the middle of the blazing desert and see snow-covered mountains in the distance.
The desert in general
Random acts of friendliness from strangers who usually couldn't understand what I was saying
Mexican food
General weirdness on Venice beach
The pub across the road from the sports ground at UCR. They made great pizza.
Other stuff that I like includes
The ability of americans to make fun of themselves
eg Southpark, The Simpsons, Futurama
The sheer complexity of the place. Such a diversity of people, lifestyles, cultures, politics, landscapes. I don't think I could ever understand it.
Edit: I forgot the kelp forests! The La Jolla and Catalina kelp forests provided some of the best diving I've ever done anywhere. It doesn't matter if you're male, female, or confused; black, white, brown, red, green, yellow; gay, lesbian; redneck cop, stoned; ugly; military style, doggy style; fat, rich or poor; vegetarian or cannibal; bum, hippie, virgin; famous or drunk-you're either an asshole or you're not!

Hold on to the thread
The currents will shift0 -
Two miles up on our way to Cripple Creek.
Almost hitting an elk which was the size of the rented Explorer on our way into one of the parks at the Grand Canyon.
Snow storm in Flagstaff just to drive a few hours to Tempe and be swimming in the hotel pool at 11pm.
Seeing Larry Bird and the Celtics play at the old Garden. Just to be followed by Gretzky and the Kings vs the Bruins. Great weekend of sport.
The loving three brothers in Cleveland who took my buddy and I out for dinner after a Cleveland Browns game and they couldn't believe he spoke very good English. Hell, they grilled him in a nice way about everything. Almost like he was from another planet. Genuine innocence I hope.
The "Howie" chant as the Bills were crushing the Raiders 51 to 03 I do believe in the nice cold of Buffalo.
The couple who took us out after a Penguins game. After they were totally blown away how I predicted the penalty calls during the game. He was so impressed, he kept the beer flowing for me throughout the game. And he got to enjoy some good old fasioned Cdn smoke while driving to the bar after. Share and share alike kiddies.
Did I mention Mile High Stadium and John Elway?
Colorado should really be called Alberta II.
Morgantown WV. The place fucking rocks!
Driving across the longest spanning, single arch bridge. Don't know if it is still the record? You've changed your place in this world!0 -
Thanks for the warm welcome0

Camden, Maine.
Rockport, Maine and many other small towns like this.
The White Mountains.
The Gunks (woohoo rock climbing!)
Ithaca, NY.
The Finger Lakes.
Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor.
Watkins Glen.
Hitch hiking and sitting in the back of a truck while the sun is beating down on you and you see that typical American road move beneath you, while you are driving through the most beautiful nature.
Meeting random people in New Hampshire and randomly meeting friends of theirs in New York!
All the beautiful lakes and rivers!
Skowhegan, Norridgewock and Waterville.
Blueberry muffins!
Scubascott's post sums up great things as well (but Mexican food
) such as: the diversity, the land scapes... THANK YOU, LOSTDAWG!

I'm not from the US, but I did spend 7 months living out of the back of a van as I climbed my way around US in 2005.
My favortie parts of the trip was...
(5) The ridiculous number of quality micro-breweries across the country and the friendly people serving them... and the fact that Australian Wine is cheaper in the US then at home.
(4) The all you can eat buffy I found in Vegas, and the fact that one weekend in vegas is probably all my frail body will ever be able to handle. Also thanksgiving and deep fried turkey- and the amusing fact that people have died whilst attempting to deep fry poultry.
(3) The landscape- Sunsets across the sierra nevada, the drive down into death valley, the freezing midnight swims in mountain creeks and the first snows in Utah. The US is the most diverse and spectacular country I have yet visited.
(2) Flagstaff.... One of the nicest cities I have seen, despite the fact that it left me with a broken nose after a drunken piggy backing accident in the main street.
(1) The People... We may not have shared similar views on religon, politics, gun control etc., but I never once felt unwelcome and always enjoyed the friendly chatting and lively debates.0
