When it comes to music, American bands make up over half the cds in my sizable collection. (the rest being british or norwegian for the most) I could mention at length all the great music, but suffice to say that among my top 10 artists, probably 7-8 are american.
Writers: You have Stephen King, a gift to humanity as far as I'm concerned. You have also a lot of great non-fiction writers and activists like Chomsky, Zinn, Quinn and so on. Oh, and Kurt Vonnegut! (although he's a bit of an import really)
Generally, you have some of the best and brightest minds living within your borders.
Americans seem to be more open to other opinions actually. (a diversity which somehow fail to manifest at the national level politics) You have great traditions for activism and charity.
You make a mean sandwich! Even the chain-store ones are pretty good.
Food in general, you get heaps of it. That can also be a bad thing, really.
I truly love many aspects of american culture and activism. But along with all the best, you have some of the worst in other areas to temper it with. I won't go into that here, since we're gonna focus on positive here.
Peace
Dan

Add "The Constitution" to that list and it would be pretty much perfect.
EDIT: Also add Kyuss and telvision violence. Then it is perfect.
Well I'm not acquainted enough with the US Constitution. However I do know that most Latin American Constitution writers were inspired by the Bill of Rights.
About Kyuss, well no idea what kind of music they play, and television violence is not a good thing in my book...
The Grand Canyon, The Rockies and the beaches along the Gulf Coast.

America rocks and i love it!
You can pretty much just be what you want to be. Ok, socially it can suck and theres no help for the hopeless.... Go to any big city and see the people on the street corners! Its not nice.
Nevertheless, check out the cars, the scenery, the music scene, the industry, the movie, the athletes.
Its got em all.
Stop bashing the US i say. The world knows who it will be calling on when it needs the heavy lifting done..
edit: someone else mentioned Elia Kazan... i think he was Greek
oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.
What!!!!!!! Is this an American thing? Everybody knows it is Jack, straight, sippin' or Jack, on ice, sippin'. Verified upon my trip to Lynchburg to see the grand daddy of all boozes home plant. In honour of the little man with the big thought, Mr. Jack D.
A few other things to toss in about the good ole U S of Eh.
NYC.
A few good bands.
The people who understand the world does not revolve around the US.
And Homer Simpson.........USA, USA, USA, USA, USA, USA.
i like the ability to work hard and get ahead without restriction. i like being able to take a dream and make it reality. i like my right to carry a gun to protect myself from those who use a gun to attack me. i like how it's still basically still the 1880's in vast parts of the west where world events (except global warming) have no effect on us. i like the desert sky at night. i like the peace of the open range.
Very cool thread! We should have threads that focus on the positives of a country more often.
Let's see.............I love the cultural diversity of the US. I love the fact that I can visit any number of US cities and get a different cultural experience. In the US you can take 'nothing' and turn it into something quite amazing.
I also love the diversity of the landscapes, from the 'emerald coast' of the gulf coast to the Rocky Mountains to the 'badlands' of the Dakotas. We have the beauty of Alaska & Hawaii. I could go on and on. I also have to throw in NYC, I love NYC and, because I'm bias, the beauty of the Ozarks.
Edit to add New Orleans! I love New Orleans!!!

But I absolutely loved Maine!
Those little peaceful towns with the friendliest people!
Most Americans I met were very friendly and hospitable.
Mountain Dew.
And there's that feeling I can't quite articulate. That peaceful, adventurous feeling.

I did. Yes I know he was greek, but his whole career was pursued in the US. Maybe I should have written Elia Kazan movies
