Someone making $98,000 per year pays the exact same dollar amount into Social Security as someone who's making one million per year, one billion per year, etc - roughly $6,000.

If you make one million dollars per year, you only pay $6,000 into Social Security. Someone needs to suggest lifting that cap entirely.

Will you lift the benefit cap as well then?

I would rather they suggest abolishing the entire program. Make it voluntary for those that think the government is better at planning and preparing their retirement.

Hehe...funding problem solved? Ok, so you've just massively increased the taxes for small business owners everywhere, thereby increasing unemployment and decreasing earnings for average workers, thereby forcing increased payouts from your system via SSI. Furthermore, you've completely bastardized a system that, while foolish, at least held onto a personal investment in personal future concept.

In the end though, you'll probably still end up ahead by taking the full amount from the wealthy and paying them back an incredibly tiny percentage back. But wouldn't it be easier to simply steal their property, sell it at auction, and then dump the profits out of helicopters over major cities?

No. I prefer the beaurocratic method. The "massive layoffs" will eventually balance out and would likely never even reach Great Depression standards.

Those are lofty goals you have there. But you're right, the "massive layoffs" would likely not reach Great Depression standards. Congratulations.

Now, on a personal note, such a plan would be it for me here in this economic system. That would increase my tax obligation to obscene levels. Most of you may not realize this, but employers foot half of your social security bill. My personal and business taxes would skyrocket under your plan. At that point, I could move my entire business and any employees that wanted to join me to the Caymans or somewhere similar and do so at a lower cost than the obligations required of me under that plan.
