the long term benefits possible from building new schools as opposed to the long term damage done by this war.

ill agree. ive opposed the war in iraq, but sadly, i dont see any way out at this point. we have to have more troops there if we hope to accomplish anything.

however, id rather see that money going to giving teachers raises and hiring more of them and giving them better books. we don't need new school buildings. we need to make sure the ones we have can operate.

The money could also be returned to the taxpayers, who could then spend/save as best suits their families specific needs.

They are tax payers and they are arguing about how they'd like to see their tax money spent. Wouldn't it be great if all the tax payers came together and agrued about what they wanted to do with that money and came up with a few common goals?

It would be great! It would make taxation largely unnecessary.

However, since all the tax payers have very disparate goals, we enter a situation wherein a few get to steal from the rest to accomplish their chosen goals. I'm sorry that you lost out to a warmonger, but your system kind of asks for it.

No, my government does exactly that. I am not particularly fond of our current government but I guess I wouldn't be fond of many governments. We pay very high taxes but I am glad that we have social welfare.

But how exactly is this my system, that's what I don't get?

off the wall statistic? the point being there are a number of things we could have done with this money. Further to that, when money is needed for education, or healthcare, or whatever, its never available. but when its for a war, somehow we always find endless amounts of money. its called priorites buddy.

and i must have missed the part where the "democrates" advised more troops and money.

Wouldn't it be great if people spent their own money on issues they thought important?

I'd prefer we didn't have enough federal tax revenue to pay for Iraq or 35,000 schools.
