A question of spirits/souls

JoeTzu wrote:I think what everyone "Feels, senses, sees, yadda yadda yadda, is easily explained through enlightenment/sensitivity.
A sensitive person tends to get the most out of their emotions and feelings. Now if you mix that with enlightenment, you get a person who realizes that other people have the same emotions and feelings as they do.
Now enlightenment comes in many forms; meaning not all at once. That's kind of beside the point though. It's the connection between people we're really after. Like what eV. talks about with the fans/set list.
Now if your still following I'll try and wrap it up. Sensitivity + a sense of enlightenment = Connection. Connection = a sense of oneness. Sense of oneness = unexplainable. Unexplainable = unscientific explanation = ghosts, spirits, souls.

you wanna see a spiritual man??? meet my dad.... he'll talk to you and for a half-hour with him you'll start shedding tears like a little baby. true story. only if i were half the man he is.... i'd really be someone.
i rather doubt that.0 -

that meeting anyone, no matter how much ass they kick, would make me shed tears. does he inspire his own form of beatlemania everywhere he goes? people hyperventilating and weeping and reaching out just to touch him when he walks by? come on!0 -

do you ever watch everybody loves raymond?
remember the priest? not that my dad's a priest... but whenever the entire family is arguing and making a bunch of noise.... the priest just waits till everybody quiets down and once he speaks everybody's listening. and for once everybody understands each other... but it only lasts while he's talking.
that's a character my dad has. that's all i'm saying. my dad ain't no icon.... just saying he's a simple guy, nothing spectacular. it's just good to know that there are very few good people around in this world. that's all i'm saying.
he's got his share of errors... but it only makes it much more real. cause it gives you a shade of hope that living a good life, no matter what, can still be attainable. that's what i was trying to say.
now, you come on! (whatever that means)This isn't the land of opportunity, it's the land of competition.0 -
Ahnimus wrote:What is you reason for your belief in spirits and/or souls?
The Bible, I suppose. I think some of Paul's writings imply we have something that survives death of the body. As far as a concrete defintion as to what exactly that "substance" is , well, I don't have one....Ahnimus wrote:What evidence supports your belief??
Nothing empirical.Ahnimus wrote:What is the logical steps taken to this conclusion?
Uh, I suppose the "logical steps" COULD be me believing 1)what the Bible teaches is true, 2) the Bible teaches humans have souls, C) it is therefore true humans have souls (or some kind of reasoning along those lines).
Note, I'm not proposing this as an argument for the existence of souls; this won't win any one over to Christian doctrine (there would be too much to debate about concerning the premises) But you asked about logical steps that led to my belief, and this is an example.0 -
deadnothingbetter wrote:what are you talking about?
you said that within an hour of speaking to your dad ill start shedding tears like a little baby. i said i doubt that.
i hate everybody loves raymond.
i'm sure your dad's a great guy, but i i found the hyperbolic praise a little funny.0 -

i'm here shrugging my arms like it doesn't even matter. at least nothing to start an argument over.
just take it as it is, at face value.
but i'm sure if you were to meet someone like him and grew a fond relationship with him... there'd be moments that you'd recall, like saying, "yeah, that dude was a trip. everything he said was very insightful."
ah, heck... you've probably met someone like that already.
i can give you numerous cases/situations where people were taken by awe at what he was saying.
like for instance, i told this very same thing to one of my cousins... whom i hadn't seen for a long time. his response was just like yours, weird.
then in my uncle's funeral, my dad said a few words and everybody was driven by his speech. my cousin, months later, told me that i was right. and now he's been wanting to see my dad preach.
see, i'm only saying this to show you that spirituality is a big part of my life. this, i illustrate it through my dad. but i could go on and bring it closer to home. but i'd rather keep those to myself. This isn't the land of opportunity, it's the land of competition.0 -

so you're saying you think your dad could reduce me to tears? im sure he's inspiring, but those fiery baptist preachers don't do anything but make me giggle. i didn't cry at my grandmother's funeral. i didn't cry when i lost 2 friends to suicide. i didn't cry while sobering up. and i sure as shit wouldn't cry becos i'm so awestruck by your amazing daddy.
like i said, im sure he's a great guy and good at what he does. im just saying i rather doubt he inspires this wailing and gnashing of teeth you ascribe to him.0 -
I've still got yours if your wondering about it Ryan.
It's perfectly safe and I've been keeping it well cared for.
I probably cannot rationally and logically explain souls to you. I certainly couldn't do it scientifically, but I do believe that they exist.
Recently when my grandmother died, I was with her in her final weeks and also when she took her last breath. In the days leading up 'til that moment, she was no longer speaking and she lost conciousness in the last day or so, but during that time I could still feel her "presence" in the room. Knew that she was aware that I was with her. When she died, I could feel nothing. She was just gone. Now I realize that you would explain that as her brain having stopped and that other biological function had ceased, but to me it was more than that. I didn't have a great epiphany that she had gone to somewhere greater or that her "presence" was now in a different form. It was there and then it was gone. She was there and then she was gone. There was no sense of "God" being in the room for me. But the "essence" or "presence" of who she was, or is, it lives on inside me. I realize that to you that would be simply all that I have "learned" of her during my life but I do believe it is more than that. To me a "soul" is the essence of a person. It is more than their brain function, more than the hormonal reaction we have to each other, more than just a beating heart and breath going in and out. More than familiarity. A soul is the uniqueness, the individual specialness of a person. Never to be repeated. All of which you could probably explain with science and probably not something I have explained very well here, but to me the science of it is not enough. There is more to us than what can be explained scientifically and certainly, I believe, more to us than can be attributed to "God".NOPE!!!

well there is a 21 gram diffrence of life right before death, not that it proves anything but something to ponder over, as i do believe we have souls.Troubled souls unite, we got ourselves tonight
I am fuel, you are friends, we got the means to make amends
I am lost, I'm no guide, but I'm by your side
I am right by your side... PJ0 -

so everyone that's ever died, even those that did so in accidents, were weighed just prior to and again after they died to come up with this supposed 21 gram discrepency?hear my name
take a good look
this could be the day

lie beside me

Ghosts? Yes. We are a power in this universe and powers just don't die. You've changed your place in this world!0

Assuming that we do have souls, I don't see how that suddenly means there is a god. It just means we have some kind of life force inside of us that we have yet to understand. The idea of some kind of superior life force that has dominion over all life forces is a whole other concept.0

you're kinda weird.
actually, i'd say the way you worship your dad and put him on a pedestal is kinda weird. anyway, i was just kinda poking fun at you with the first post, saying i rather doubt your dad would make me weep by his very presence. but you seemed to keep insisting that i would tremble in his awe-inspiring presence and that seems an incredibly weird thing to say to me, so i kept asking you about it to clarify. you shouldn't take yourself so seriously.0 -
