  • I suppose with multiple items in one's basket it is conceivable that someone could rack up $3000 in unprocessed tickets.

I stand corrected if that was the case, but rockpants' post doesn't clearly state that as the issue.
i thought he cleary stated he racked up over $2500 in charges...

at least thats how i read it....

    oh well...

i know one person who racked up over $1200......and i know that for a fact...

i know another who racked up over $600....

its just a shame that this happened.........
    Take me piece by piece.....
Till there aint nothing left worth taking away from me.....

It is a shame. Regardless of how it may have happened or for how much, it's certainly not fair.

Was it inconceivable? No. Was it avoidable? Maybe. But it is a situation of "buyer beware." That's not the best business practice, and not everyone buying yesterday was familiar with similar server problems and unprocessed charges, so if nothing else people will be forewarned for future slammed servers. I have no doubt there will be problems in the future.

I'm prepared for it and will persevere through it.

I dont think people are looking at the big picture. Maybe 10 club has been advised not to make a big public announcement. Perhaps they are still working otu money details or legal issues.

People here are talking about legal action. Don't you think 10 Club has lawyers?

Its been 1 day. You'll all get your money and your little personalized apology. But it will never be enough.

Are you sure about that? As was stated before, the Big Bold and Free thing was meant to be an apology and that went really well. I often get the impression that sometimes the 10 Club are as pretentious as some of the people around here. It's almost like they know they have no obligation to address things so they don't. But hey, we got our X-Mas single around Christmas! And we got a few days notice to update our profile so we were eligible to order the $200 poster book! :)

And to the guy saying people should get a credit card instead of using a debit card for this stuff...fuck that. There is no way anyone should have to apply for a new card just in case the 10 Club fucks up. They have been in business since 1993 or 1994. They should know how to do things correctly by now (both technically and customer service wise), especially after all the previous problems.

    agreed

Use a f-ing credit card for gods sakes; those who don't know how debit cards works have to share some of the blame. I have had many transactions that take more than one out, but they are just pending. Every time you use a card for gas, food, etc., the company takes more than it's amount until the charge actually goes through.

You're right. No one should have to get a credit card or make any other kind of concession. No one has to do any of that. I'm just offering solutions in the face of a wave of discontent.

Choose how you'll respond to the issue. Be active on your own end or rely on someone else (the Ten Club).

    You decide.

Good for you. Avoidable? Yeah, if I'd never tried for tickets in the first place. Not once was there any indication that my credit card was being hit, just that an error occurred. It is logical to conclude that the transaction did not go through - If there was no transaction, then there shouldn't be any activity on any card, whatsoever. So try, try again. There always seem to be posters and whatnot that get released into the system way after it seems they're all sold out, so based on that previous experience, I kept going. Then I got the first "declined" message, which was utterly confusing since I knew I had over $2500 on my card. At the same time, I thought, "Well, it's not getting an error, it's obviously reading the card this time." So I tried a couple more times (declined) and then tested out my other credit card, which got the old error message. That's when I thought to check my first card and found it to be tapped out.

Perhaps ask of the 10C - Preventable? Yes. All they had to do was remove the flash or HTML code (or whatever they're using) so that the entire "Buy" scenario no longer existed. Take off all the tickets if they're all gone, which could have happened far earlier in the day.

The only thing that will hurt me in the end is if the overdraft charges are not reversed. If I can't get any tickets on Thursday or Friday, then this will be the first time I've ever paid to *not* go to a show. This sort-of thing was supposed to happen with Limp Bizkit, Good Charlotte, or Nickelback, not Eddie Vedder!

I am not in financial dire straits and it won't be the end of me by a long shot (count me in, Speedy, as one with a few grand in the chequing account, though there aren't many of us.) But every penny & dollar count, regardless, and I earn that money day in and day out (and on a personal level, with my injuries, I pay for the money I earn, too.)

  • Holy shit...I about pissed myself.

And that failure's no success at all."

"Don't ya think its sometimes wise not to grow up."

Absolutely. Considering what you went through (accruing what seems like the biggest financial hit of anyone on this board with nothing to show for it), you have one of the best attitudes out there regarding this mess. If only others could learn from your style of response to the situation. The Ten Club is far more apt to listen to your story (and offered solution) than the majority up on the board.

Whether they do is to be seen.

I wish you all the best ticket karma in the world for the TicketMaster on-sale dates.

It's been frustrating, but I think the worst I got was suggesting the 10C kiss my arse. But it was in a cheeky sort of way - literally. :)

Thanks for the karma wishes ... I haven't emailed the 10C yet, I may tomorrow. I am awaiting an email response from VISA, which should come soon. I phoned earlier tonight but couldn't get a clear answer on any possible overdraft charges and had a hard time explaining exactly what happened - "I tried to buy a product that wasn't really there, multiple times". I'm better off writing it all down, and provided a few links to show that I was not the only person affected by this.

To add insult to injury in all this, my hockey team is on a losing streak and I ran out of one of my main food groups, ketchup!

What's all this about silence? I was wailing away on my credit card because I thought I had snagged a pair of tickets, but kept getting the error message. I e-mailed the 10C and they e-mailed me back the same response other people seem to be getting. If you're in financial peril over this, e-mail the 10C and they'll respond with instructions on how to expedite the release on the authorizations.

They obviously screwed up, but let's take a little personal responsibility here as well. Don't go wailing away on a credit/debit card if you're on a tight budget to begin with. We're talking about a goddamn concert...
  • It's good to hear that you've received a positive response from the Ten Club. I had a feeling they were responding to people's emails.

Unfortunately, the threads are dominated by negative experiences. This whole server issue is no doubt negative, but how we all respond to the situation determines the end result: We either learn and adapt or we complain and hope that someone else solves the problem.

In a perfect world, the Ten Club's technology would be able to handle our demand. (In a utopia, we'd all get tickets to every show we wanted to attend.) But in our current world, we have to make due with a flawed system.

My hope is that both the Ten Club and its members take much away from Monday, February 18, 2008:

    (1) Pearl Jam fans are rabid; we will always be demanding tickets that are limited in supply, and we will be equally rabid in our criticism over lack of tickets and/or errors in the process. And there will always be something that doesn't go 100% our way.

    (2) The current system for ticket distribution has flaws. Is it better than the old paper system? I'm on the fence. Rolling on-sale dates may help, but demand will still outweigh supply, and people love to travel to see this band, so it will only help a little.

    (3) Get yourself a Pearl Jam credit card; something you only use to buy tickets. If you have money in the bank (evident by so many people using their debit cards), then just pay down the credit card balance immediately following the confirmation of receipt of tickets. Simple as that. And get a credit card that gives you airline miles so you can help yourself fly out to shows. Southwest Airlines has a Visa. Done. And done.

    (4) Don't bite the hand that feeds you. This goes both ways. To the Ten Club for (unintentionally) wronging some of its most devoted fans. And to the members who have said some really horrible things about a great fan club. You've got to take the good with the bad. My estimate is that the good has far outweighed the bad over the past 18 years.

    (5) Be fiscally responsible. As a business, have methods in place to quickly rectify problems such as errant charges. As a individual, don't choose a concert over bills and food.

    (6) Take some responsibility. Again, both ways. I can't speak for the way in which the Ten Club has decided to address this situation. It seems they have, in fact, addressed the issue on a personal level with those members who have contacted the Ten Club by phone or email. Don't expect a grand announcement to this message board, though. The Message Pit does not constitute the end-all-be-all portal to Pearl Jam fandom. If you felt wronged on Monday, take action. And denouncing the Ten Club or complaining on these threads is not considered action.

Remember, good karma can go a long way. You may not have gotten tickets this time around, but the band will be touring soon enough, and there will be tickets for everyone. And hopefully both the Ten Club and its members will have learned something from this whole ordeal.
