    Just to point out....he is in favor of the "Fair Tax"....which is a very "republican" type policy.....the fair tax would not help the poorer people as it is a flat tax on all goods.

    This is from that site....Progressive Taxes - A fair Tax Senator Gravel's Progressive Fair Tax proposal calls for eliminating the IRS and the income tax and replacing it with a national sales tax on new products and services. To compensate for the tax on necessities, such as food, lodging, transportation and clothing, there would be a "rebate" to reimburse taxpayers. This would be paid in a monthly check from the government to all citizens. The focus on taxing new goods would also help tackle the global climate change problem.     The idea he has would work great...and his ideas for carbon..unbelievable... they would work... is his sales tax idea the same as fairtax???

    I checked him out and he seems like a standard Dem. Can someone explain the attraction? Is it just the Vietnam thing?

    the fair tax is a great idea, im actually a huge supporter of it, makes alot of sense, and i really think america could benefit from it.

    Yeah, the idea he is backing was created by several republicans...I cant rememebr their names....but it calls for eliminating the IRS, so no income taxes and instead having a national sales tax.

    This would not help any poor or even lower middle class people because they, for the most part, do not pay much, if any, income taxes. However, they would now be paying a HUGE increase in sales taxes, so food, clothing, etc would now become more expensive.

    I don't know that much about it except: A) It would hit poor families harder than rich families; and B) It seems like a pain in the ass, what with having to wait on rebate checks every month and what not.

    anyway, not saying I'd be totally against it. But, on the surface, I don't see the draw.

    the reason i think he is the best guy for the job is because he has brought real ideas to the table rather than just saying...we need to change... everyone knows we need to change...its the quest how that is becoming harder to understand...

    and he is far from a standard democrat so im not sure where you check him out at?? do you have a link...it may be a bogus web page or something


    he wants to enact the national initiative which would give the citizens the power to be lawmakers. he wants to run for only 4 years...thats all he needs to get it in the works.

    the upper half of america would benefit from it. Not so much for the working class poor, or the struggling lower-middle class.

    Corporations would no longer have income taxes, same goes for the rich.

    Mike Gravel's National Sales tax idea would not hit poor families hard... it would hit people who feel the need to buy things they dont need hard.

    And Mike Gravel's Salex tax idea is the same as the Fair Tax. Its really not his idea.

    Mike Gravel has a pretty good track record....but this is not his greatest platform.

    In a sense, yes. But in general, sales tax is a bigger bitch for the poor than the rich. A rich man won't care about an extra dollar on bread; it might break a poor man.

    Do you have any idea how large the increase would be? It says that he would offset the tax with a rebate, I assume that if he eliminates the IRS and still has money to issue a rebate, the sales tax increase would have to be substantial.
