i gotta disagree.. i think its very fair and simple.

the more you consume, the more you put in to the tax pool...after all i think it is safe to say...the ones consuming the greates are the ones using the place up :)

But basic food and necessities would be taxed to poor families who already are not being taxed income tax.....

the reason i think he is the best guy for the job is because he has brought real ideas to the table rather than just saying...we need to change... everyone knows we need to change...its the quest how that is becoming harder to understand...

and he is far from a standard democrat so im not sure where you check him out at?? do you have a link...it may be a bogus web page or something

he wants to enact the national initiative which would give the citizens the power to be lawmakers. he wants to run for only 4 years...thats all he needs to get it in the works.

    google

    Mike Gravel/National Initiative

He's your guy...I'm just asking for a couple highlights that make him stand out from Obama, Clinton, Edwards, etc. Is it just the Fair Tax?

I get a paycheck every week....I make a decent amount...I dont own my own business...

I simply raise my allowances on my tax form so that the govt doesnt get all my money. they get their share of taxes, but not mine.

I make $300 more per paycheck than i used to because I raised my allowances on that form.

I wont get a huge return....maybe a thousand or so....maybe a little less....but I have more in my pocket each paycheck.

For the record, I kind of like Mike Gravel.....

he has a pretty good track record, seems pretty progressive, especially with pro-choice, same sex marriage, troop withdrawal....all issues I agree with him.

But I am less than thrilled with is energy policy.

And I ABSOLUTELY hate the National Sales tax.....its like the "No Child Left Behind" of the tax world....decent theory....will never ever work....

And its WAY too conservative for me.

And to be honest....it is a huge sticking point with me. But to be fair....nobody will ever go for it anyway.

the last thing Ill say about this for now.......if we simply changed the tax code now....institute a National sales tax and eliminate the IRS....in THIS ECONOMY.....the US would enter a recession the likes of which we may never recover from.

Yeah, I said that. Did you see Ghostbusters? When that Walter Peck orderd the Ecto containment Unit to be shut off? You saw what happened, right? Well, thats what would happen to our economy.

Just think about 23% sales tax on a home purchase. You think the housing market is in a slump now????? Just wait.

Then NOBODY could afford to live......

i dont quite understand this either...and when i talked to gravel when he was here at UCF... i didnt ask him.. i should have.. but it slipped my mind..

Initially though i think Gravel just entered the race becasue he wanted to debate Obama and Hillary in the debates..and when they started excluding him...he started fighting back.

you are wrong. the reason the housing market is in a slump is several factors

one of them of course is these people who thought it was career to buy homes and then sell them a couple months later for increased value...
    (this is shockingly irresponsible)

also people were buying homes they couldnt afford.. and they are losing them...

vedhead... this sales tax replacing the income tax will take care of these things... people will no longer be buying houses they cant afford... rather than being modest right now people are still buying mansions... i know a friend who has this gigantic house on the outskirts of town and its just him his wife and there newborn... this plus a huge boat..2 new cars... they make good money, but no one can afford that debt and they were led to believe they were..

if the sales tax was in place..they would have been more modest.

  • I agree; although I donate to Greens, I did sign in onto Gravel's site today. (showing my age) I remember his support for Daniel Ellsberg. Gravel has a terrific issues statement.

Out of him, Hil, and Obama, Gravel is the only one who is proposing real change.

He might not be a smooth talker like Barack but he appears to be much more genuine about his stance on the issues.

i agree, and i can only hope that many more of us wake up and vote for this guy. i matched almost 100% to him in one of those candidate quizzes. before that, i'd barely heard of him.

here's his profile at On The Issues:

"Ladies and gentlemen, the President of the United States, Barack Obama."

"Obama's main opponent in this election on November 4th (was) not John McCain, it (was) ignorance."~Michael Moore

From Senator Gravel: Statement on Edwards's Dropping Out
    January 31st, 2008 by jpeters

It saddened me greatly to hear yesterday that John Edwards had decided to drop out of the race. We may have had our differences on some issues, such as supporting gay marriage and ending the war on drugs, but clearly he was a better choice for America than the two remaining so-called top-tier Democratic candidates, Sens. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.

Edwards and I agreed more than we disagreed on many vital issues, such as ending the war in Iraq, cutting the military budget and fighting the culture of corruption in Washington.

To his credit, Edwards has shown great moral strength and integrity by admitting that his original support for the war in 2002 was “a mistake.” Now, he advocates ending the war in its entirety, something that Clinton and Obama have not done. Clinton and Obama have the power to stop the violence, but neither one has stepped forward to show true leadership in the Senate by confronting Bush and the military-industrial complex on Iraq and the widening war on terror.

And when the mainstream media and the Democratic Party leadership conspired to drop me from the national debates, it was Edwards who kept the pressure on Clinton for her vote in favor of war with Iran.

Let’s not forget that Clinton has raised more money from the military-industrial complex than any other candidate – including even the Republicans! Her ties to corporations like WalMart, her legislation that benefits defense firms like Northrop Grumman and her pro-war voting record – let’s just say we shouldn’t be expecting her to cut the military budget and reinvest the money domestically where it is needed most.

As for Obama, where’s the change? He votes like Clinton, and his endorsement of military spending increases and his Wall Street backing make him yet another corporate-backed Establishment candidate.

Every day now, we hear pundits speculating on who is going to drop out of the race next. In their myopic view, however, they do not understand what we do. Winning the nomination isn’t the only reason some of us run for the highest office in the country. We persevere because we care deeply for our country, and we subject ourselves to the grueling schedule and the often unflattering media spotlight because we believe in the importance of the issues that we bring to the table.

It is these issues where John and I agree that I hope will bring us all together in support of real change – not the safe, focus-group-tested solutions proffered by media-friendly candidates.
