My last visit to the US only covered southern california, but some of the highlights were:
Death Valley
the Sierra Nevadas (The mountains, not the beer. That stuff was terrible)
squirels
chipmunks
rattlesnakes
coyotes
Being able to stand in the middle of the blazing desert and see snow-covered mountains in the distance.
The desert in general
Random acts of friendliness from strangers who usually couldn't understand what I was saying
Mexican food
General weirdness on Venice beach
The pub across the road from the sports ground at UCR. They made great pizza.
Other stuff that I like includes
The ability of americans to make fun of themselves
eg Southpark, The Simpsons, Futurama
The sheer complexity of the place. Such a diversity of people, lifestyles, cultures, politics, landscapes. I don't think I could ever understand it.
Edit: I forgot the kelp forests! The La Jolla and Catalina kelp forests provided some of the best diving I've ever done anywhere.
Sounds awesome. Those kelp forests would be just awesome so long as you avoid the white sharks eh?0 -
Monument Valley. My first taste of Mexican food was sitting in the restaurant overlooking the area. Chilli Taco's.
Mexican's been my favourite food ever since.
The Mesa Verde National Park and the Anasazi ruins. Beautiful place.

The area around the Grand Canyon was also a special place. Really magical.
Also, the Shenandoah national park. We drove past Harpers ferry and saw all that Civil war history. Great stuff.0 -

A friend of mine and I were doing a little tour. He is big on universities, no matter where we would travel. UWV just happened to be on our way out of Pittsburgh to wherever land and all of a sudden a gas fill up led to not leaving that nice, quaint, little town of Morgantown. You've changed your place in this world!0 -
