Wednesday October 29, 2008 McCain Miami Rally, Getting Ugly Down Here
McCain Miami Rally, Getting Ugly Down Here

Look in later today for our On the Road piece from Wilmington, North Carolina. We're a bit ahead of our coverage, which occasionally happens out here with the long distances, input, output and timing demands. Tonight we'll be at the Obama-Clinton rally in Kissimmee, Florida, and we're breaking in from Miami, where John McCain just concluded his "Joe the Plumber" rally at Everglades Lumber.

After the rally, we witnessed a near-street riot involving the exiting McCain crowd and two Cuban-American Obama supporters. Tony Garcia, 63, and Raul Sorando, 31, were suddenly surrounded by an angry mob. There is a moment in a crowd when something goes from mere yelling to a feeling of danger, and that's what we witnessed. As photographers and police raced to the scene, the crowd elevated from stable to fast-moving scrum, and the two men were surrounded on all sides as we raced to the circle.

The event maybe lasted a minute, two at the most, before police competently managed to hustle the two away from the scene and out of the danger zone. Only FiveThirtyEight tracked the two men down for comment, a quarter mile down the street.

"People were screaming 'Terrorist!' 'Communist!' 'Socialist!'" Sorando said when we caught up with him. "I had a guy tell me he was gonna kill me."

Asked what had precipitated the event, "We were just chanting 'Obama!' and holding our signs. That was it. And the crowd suddenly got crazy."

Come Election night VIRGINIA will be the key as to who might win this election. Here's what you could do on that night Be the Smart One at Your Election Party!

Six states' polls close at this time, but you should pay particular attention to Indiana and Virginia.

Here's why: You can posit to the party-goers that they are in for a Democratic “wave” if NBC News projects that Sen. Barack Obama has won Indiana and Virginia.

Even if Obama wins Virginia while losing Indiana (and later, Florida), it will suggest a pretty tough road to 270 electoral votes for Sen. John McCain. (And if you are reading this, you already know the magic number is 270.)

    Why?

Without Virginia’s 13 electoral votes, McCain would almost certainly need all of these states to have a chance of winning 270:

    New Hampshire (four electoral votes)
    Ohio, (20)
    Iowa (seven), and
    Colorado (nine).

Keep in mind, Virginia hasn't voted Democratic since 1964 (Lyndon Johnson) but has been trending Democratic. The state has a Democratic governor (Tim Kaine), one Democratic senator (Jim Webb) and will most likely have a second, with former Gov. Mark Warner leading in the polls by about 20 points.

But if the night begins with a McCain win in Virginia, then it’s shaping up as a longer night than most Democrats expect (read: If you're a Dem, now's the time you may want to switch from beer to coffee).

And if we hear that McCain has won both Virginia and Florida, the Republican's chances start looking much better.

While trolling for signs and waiting for more states to be called in the presidential contest, check up on a Virginia House race: Virgil Goode (R) vs. Tom Perriello (D).

Goode was a Democrat until he left the party in 2000. He has held his seat in mostly rural southern Virginia since 1997.

His district includes Charlottesville — home of the University of Virginia and very Democratic — but it also takes in a lot of very Republican counties.

Democrats are trying to knock Goode out, with very hard-hitting ads attacking him on health care and veterans’ issues.

So remember this phrase: What’s good for Goode is good for House Republicans.....

This morning in DC The Washington Post is the 14th Biennial Outlook Crystal Ball Contest
    Pundit Predictions for Election 2008

What qualified as "new school" in politics in 1982? Angry attack-faxes? One thing was brand new: Outlook's Crystal Ball, an election prediction contest now on its 14th go-round. In 2008, a lot has seemed new school. The political blogosphere exploded. Sen. Barack Obama sent text messages. So, to update Outlook's venerable tradition, we've pitted new school against old. "Old school" here is both a term of art and an honorific. The contestants in that category are veteran political observers. "New school," meanwhile, doesn't mean total novice. (At least one "new schooler" competed before. Hint: She also once ran for governor of California.) Those contestants are from a new sphere of political analysis that didn't exist before George W. Bush won in 2000.

The Washington Post is the 14th Biennial Outlook Crystal Ball Contest: Pundit Predictions for Election 2008

I averaged out the pundits and it's around 342 Obama.....279 McCain. That's pretty close to 341 I predicted which I think I'll be exactly right.

BTW McCain was halirious last night on SNL. :D

My sister told me since 4pm today voters have been lining up at my local middle school to vote tomorrow. Now that's a first, now I was going around the corner at around 4-5am to get in line but I can just imagine how many folks will out there by then.

Peeps ARE getting out to vote this go round. :)

ok I'm going to venture and give my prediction, I think it might be more but I'm staying conservative on my prediction.

    273 Obama
    265 McCain

I'm getting to this number pretty much giving all the toss ups to McCain, (FL, OH, IN, MO, MT, ND, VA and NC)

I say Senator Obama keeps PA, NH, CO and NM

I hope it is by much more and that by tomorrow night it'll be a done deal and we will know for sure (wishful thinking) but for now I'm only predicting with the states that I just can't see swaying the other way at this point.

This election has really gotten to the last one of my nerves, I just want it to be over.

well it looks like it's going to be 364 or 365 ...

    it's 349 now ... (Indiana ... really???)

North Carolina (15) should eventually go to Obama.

Missouri, will probably end up with McCain.

And ONE of Nebraska's split electoral votes for the Omaha district might actually break off and go for Obama. If this happens, I'm guessing NO ONE will get the exact answer.
