    From what I understand the myth arose from the ration of 10/1 glial cells to nerve cells. It was originally believed that glial cells didn't serve any functional purpose, but now are proven to do a lot. There may however, be another reason for the myth.

    Given the physiological aspect of the brain you are believing what you want to be true and not what science would tell you. What you belive much more strongly points to a belief in Intelligent Design than evolution.

    Outside influences surely affect intelligence much like exercise and diet affect our bodies. But even with activity levels and diet taken into account we can all see and acknowledge differences in the physiology of people of different races.

    It's pretty clear that asians tend to excel at math, however, the cause of the variation is actually their language and not their brains.

    In cantonese the words for numbers are quite small for example. And many languages count in tens, "Ten and 3" for example, instead of "Thirteen" which makes math easier.

    So, again, it's clear that cultural differences affect cognitive performance and so does stereotyping and many other aspects of environment. If genetics is involved in variations in cognitive performance, the affect is probably minimal.

    It's funny because Wikipedia references universities and published scientific papers. What do the textbooks reference? published scientific papers.

    No one should be submitting an essay that uses Wikipedia as a direct reference, but rather, they can use wikipedia to source out proper references.

    Let's hope so. Wikipedia is a convenient source of information with hit and miss accuracy depending on the subject. It is not a reference source. I agree with Ahnimus, it does a good job out pointing you to reference material like a good librarian does.

    So you think that the physiological make up of the brain has next to no bearing on intelligence. Do you also think the same when it comes to the body? i.e. skeletal make up has no bearing on athletic ability or potential.

    There is one major difference. Bones don't reroute themselves like synapses do. The brain is highly plastic. The brain evolves as it lives.

    sure it can be said it's about racism, but the major contributing factor goes way back with the family you were born to.

    IT's about distribution of wealth, family fortune, sucess and trust.

    When you are born and you hit the ground running it's best to have the shoes rather than the bare feet. If your family could give you the shoes you stood a better chance of staying ahead of the misfortunes.

    People adapt to traumas, so does the brain.

    It seems like you're believing what you wish to be true rather than what all we know about physiology would point to. Just because you don't like the truth is not any reaon to not believe. You above all posters on here I thought would be above this type behavior.

    This is Brooks-Gunn 1996

    They found the IQ differences between white and blacks was 18.1 points unadjusted.

    When adjusted for background variables, income, mother's education, mother's verbal ability, number of parents living at home and HOME scores, the difference worked out to be 3.4 points.

    Whether that 3.4 points is genetically caused or due to some other environmental factor is unclear. But 3.4 points is nothing.

    no but bone does remodel itself based on stresses applied to it, so while they don't reroute themselves, it does adapt to stress...Wolffs Law

    Mean White IQ - 105

    Most of this difference can be accounted for HOME environments.

    Not nearly as much as the brain does. I rented Big Brain Academy over the weekend and after 10 hours I've pretty much mastered it. Initially I had a brain weight of about 1300g, but now I exceed 2000g after a few hours of practice. That's indicative of the plasticity of the brain and it's ability to adapt and learn new environments.

    No no, science tells us that HOME environments and all the things listed account for variations in intelligence. If you look at people of the same HOME scores and such, there is a difference of 3.4 points.

    So at best you now have it down to a 12 point real difference. Taking this back to the original post, does it make Toronto a racist place if those with an actual low IQ are found to be doing 'crappy' work?
