When my daughter was a little girl, I used to be careful what female role models she was exposed to--for example, she was not allowed to see shows like Married With Children, because, among other things, of the Kelly Bundy character. My daughter loved flashy teenagers, and looked up to them, so I recognized the danger that character could have presented. As she got older, I talked to her about all that was in the media so that she could see through the illusions, since I could not shield her from it. It worked out well because she's one of the most intelligent, aware adults I know.

Cat and dog rescue services already perform abortions on pregnant stray or ferrel animals then spay or neuter them. Ferral cats are tagged (ears clipped to show they are already neutered) and returned to the 'wild', since these animals will never make good house pets.
If abortions prevent an increase in unwanted animals... I'm all for it.

The image is marketed to other females, in reality. Society not only corrupts males into objectifying women, it also corrupts women into believing they they should act like objects.

And it completely makes sense. The underlying driving force of humanity is basically our sexuality, and women and men, at least on some level, both know it comes down to what attracts men.

All business comes down to our basic human needs, and sex is obviously a huge one. Also business can stretch beyond our basic needs and hook us by convincing us we need things we don't, by pulling our unconscious strings.

Yeah, but the effects are different. Both are harmful, but I think it's useful to understand that both men and women are targets and victims of this. Playboy and porn aren't going to directly effect how women view themselves, but they will influence how men view women. And the reality... men typically follow their dick. That's why if given the chance to choose either watching Shakira shake them hips or listen to a pointed debate between Jeanene Garafalo and Ann Coulter on who is more evil, the left or the right... we're taking Shakira every time. The men who say otherwise are one of two things... a liar... or a liar who is trying to score points with a gal so he can get into her pants.

Playboy and porn has dramatically affected how I have looked at myself since puberty. I was exposed to those magazines that my older brother had in his room (that I'd steal in the fifth grade to sell to the boys at school for candy--another story!) I remember reading Xaviera Hollander's Penthouse column as a young teen, and learning about how much men enjoyed oral sex and how we girls best be putting out for male pleasure. I've objectified myself through the years to a severe degree. I had an eating disorder for about 30 years, and not to mention severe obsessive-compulsive disorder where I "did" my hair for countless hours a day--from 2-8 hours (yes, "doing" my hair). I was unable to leave my home most days (I left home about 4 days per month. I could only go out to socialize if I drank at home first, and became numb to my overwhelming insecurities. Of course drinking only led to further self-and other-objectification of myself. ). This was due to feeling that I was not up to standard. When I did go out, drunk, wearing push-up bras and ample cleavage, I was called Elvira by people in the streets. I was dramatically affected by the sexualized images that most definitely included playboy and others.

What I meant about the male sexuality before is that when women/girls are looking up to Britney, Christina, Shakira, etc. it's also because we want the package or image that is being sold--so they feel that by buying the products, they are somehow associated with that "wonderful sought after girl". But it comes down to that they want to be seen that way so that men will want them, imo.

I do agree the effects are different from a male point of view or a female one.

Hey, I hear you. My boyfriend loves intelligence in women, and yet, he also has a penchant for a certain body type that also is a bottom line for him, seemingly, based on the women he's been in relationships with. For him it's always been that he requires both, and we tend to tap into what we're looking for. I don't think it has to be either or, but I know what you are saying--we cannot supercede our most base drives. Hence: sex will continue to sell. We can try to gloss over these needs and yet there they are day in and out. We can also evolve into developing more of our emotional intelligence to balance our physical and intellectual needs, so we can have more realistic and balanced awareness.

Yes. And it feeds upon itself and grows, rather than consuming itself. You have witnessed this first hand... buying into the image that Madison Avenue sells to men who buy into it.
I don't think that anything can be done other than mothers and fathers teaching their daughters and sons about image versus substance. The best place to start is the OFF button on the television set.

I agree about substance. And I agree about TV. I gave up TV in the fall and it's a huge difference not being bombarded with the media really at all.

How can you SEE intelligence? Kindness, caring, compassion? You can't. All you can see is physical attributes... that is the initial attraction. For all you know, the smartest gal in the house is the one in the corner with the glasses and carrying around an extra 60 pounds who never gets the chance to show anyone because no one ever asks her to dance.
