Yeah, I thought about that too..Ed sort of had that sideways look to Mike when he started to retract. Maybe he was feeling Mike's eyes peircing his soul and he was like "oops, probably shouldn't have said that". In the name of band unity, I am sure they have been through this before and they know "the look" :) Like an effin marriage!

Another thread in another forum was talking about Ed's speech in Denver where he pointed at himself in regards to 'some people are harder to put up with'. Not saying these events are related, but that was the first show since ST aired, I think.

Maybe if they do another Q & A someone can ask Ed what foot tastes like. ;)

You people are hilarious! Now your playing out the band's supposed thoughts and feelings because of how you interpreted some facial expressions. You have no idea if that's how they really feel or not but you want it to be true soooooooo bad you go to the extent of making up a little soap opera of sorts. Who knows maybe you're right...maybe Mike was terribly upset about it. But the fact remains, I don't know, you don't know and nothing has been said, at least not publically about ST, so I don't feel the need to pretend I know what they truely think or feel. What else did Miss Cleo tell ya?...Is there gonna be a Goonies 2?

And, I did check out Mike again, and he had fire in his eyes. I don't think he was comfortable at all with that comment. Face it, Mike is coming out of his shell and you can tell by the nearly everything he says and does.

It looked like Mike was thinking "Fuck, Ed... shut the fuck up! We don't want to become the next Dixie Chicks!"

Whatever a book.....sorry if you think I am just making it up as I go, but watch the clip. My point has been all along, and I think I stated it quite clearly that it was not a good statement per Eddie.

I guess you can minimize what I said in total, but I think I stated quite cleary what was wrong with what was said despite Mike's reaction.

Well, ok, in this particular post I am referring to your interpretation of Mike's look. I have already said what I thought about Ed's statement but that wasn't what I was responding to at the point in time.

So Matt and Jeff chuckled, hence the 'joke'. But the camera showed Mike and he wasn't IMHO looking too pleased. Ed then expounded.

I am interpreting to some degree, but Mike is just one guy in the band who can agree with Eddie most of the time but not all the time. Why does anyone have to believe we must all, including the band agree with Eddie. Drink the Kool-Aid.

It seems to me that it wasn't something the band 'in total' would agree with because it isn't a joke that the rest of us get. Look at all the post saying 'yeah Eddie, way to go' ' exactly what I want to say to all those neo con fans', ' fuck em'.

The question was clearly about fans of a different political persuassian.

So, I am not personally offended near as much by Eddie, but I knew what would happen the moment I heard it. People would take that as liscense to say the same, at least here on the board and probably out there in the public. We have plenty of that foolishness already. There are a bunch of folks that just want PJ to go off the deep end and reject everything, including the fans who don't agree with them. But those are the crazy's in my opinon and will never add anything positive.

No one said you must agree with shit...don't know where ya came up with that. You can have an opinion on Mike's look just as I can...the point I'm making is... it's just that your opinion. You don't truely know how he felt and no matter how badly you want him to disagree or be upset about Ed's statement, you don't know shit about what he was really thinking. So it is pointless to speculate and come up with these silly scenarios in your head.

And of course there are a wide range of agreeing/disagreeing type posts about Ed's joke/rest of statement....just as there are differing opinions about who loves the No Code album. People are different and you can't please all the people all the time, nor should you try.

People are different. So are their views. Are we not suppose to try and understand other people and their opinions instead of just saying 'Fuck 'em'?

Isn't that what some of the same people here that think 'fuck 'em' is great say about how people in the US should view the middle east? If we reach the point of 'Fuck 'em' then I think you end up with an Israeli-Palestine type situation where no one's listening anymore and you just do what you want regardless of who is hurt.

This is going well beyond a rockstar's comment obviously, but I just found the whole answer to show the tendency to not really care about open dialogue and instead want the same powers that be in place controlling the masses, only with a different message....'YOUR' message. I just htink it is very hypocritical...at least it appeared that way on the surface.

    well said.
i haven't seen storytellers yet, no cable/VH1, a friend just sent me a copy and i shall soon watch. that said, i have read/heard much about this whole "fuck 'em" comment and it does sound like it was said in jest...but i can certainly see one not enjoying such a comment...even in jest. many a truthful word is masked in humor. i really don't believe ed is the devisive type, and i think he is probably just as frustrated as most of us are at the state of things...while of course, all only guesses on my part...can't truly 'know' what ed thinks/feels...so i just kinda believe he just let the comment fly, directed at the current powers at be...but didn't have any true malicious intent to those who have views different from his own. i look forward to watching and seeing/hearing it all for myself, hopefully tonight or tomorrow.
    Stay with me...

Cincy, you know full well you make these kinds of jokes all the time and put a winkie behind it....hell, you are the master of this style of joking. ;) So to use your own words when I used to get uptight about one of your lines....'Lighten up, didn't ya see Ed smiling?' I took it as a joke much like the ones we all throw at each other here everyday. It's called sarcasm folks. I'm sorry that it has hurt you though because I truely believe that's the last thing Ed would have wanted.

I am very willing to admit that it may have been 100% joke. But it wasn't really the impression that I got...lot's of truth in humor. ;)

Oh, I'm not really all that hurt, just thought it was an interesting topic and very open to intepretation so I was looking for other's.

Funny thing, when I saw him in the hotel in Mexico carrying his kid as the ban was packing to leave I treated him with respect, only said "Hi" and nodded. Be nice if he did the same.

ok, i finally sat down and watched storytellers thanks to the generousity of a fellow boardie kind enought send me a dvd. of course, one can only speculate...and i won't even do that. all i will say is yes, i can see how a fan of a conservative nature might be a bit hurt by ed's fuck 'em comment. given the whole context, i think if i were a conservative fan, i too would initially be hurt. the fact that it arose from a fan directly questioning how ed feels about having a contingency of fans who may hold different beliefs than his/the band...and his first response is 'fuck 'em' - even with a smile to follow...yea, that would hurt me. now, he does go on and further expound his ideas and says he respects others' opinions, hopes to at least start a discussion, etc...all the ed i know and admire...but sure, those initial words would sting. just my 2 cents.

humor or not, not one of the most eloquent or sensitive comments to come out of his mouth...and i am just glad there was more to follow to redeem such a comment. i think it's great that many who hold vastly different political beliefs can still love and appreciate the music of pearl jam, i don't know if i could seperate it since pj IS such a politically vocal band - that i think ed should see value in it, respect that and i'd think he does...but that first comment was not the best demonstration of such.
