ok, i finally sat down and watched storytellers thanks to the generousity of a fellow boardie kind enought send me a dvd. of course, one can only speculate...and i won't even do that. all i will say is yes, i can see how a fan of a conservative nature might be a bit hurt by ed's fuck 'em comment. given the whole context, i think if i were a conservative fan, i too would initially be hurt. the fact that it arose from a fan directly questioning how ed feels about having a contingency of fans who may hold different beliefs than his/the band...and his first response is 'fuck 'em' - even with a smile to follow...yea, that would hurt me. now, he does go on and further expound his ideas and says he respects others' opinions, hopes to at least start a discussion, etc...all the ed i know and admire...but sure, those initial words would sting. just my 2 cents.
humor or not, not one of the most eloquent or sensitive comments to come out of his mouth...and i am just glad there was more to follow to redeem such a comment. i think it's great that many who hold vastly different political beliefs can still love and appreciate the music of pearl jam, i don't know if i could seperate it since pj IS such a politically vocal band - that i think ed should see value in it, respect that and i'd think he does...but that first comment was not the best demonstration of such.

Ok, I used the search function trying a few things and I looked back 5 pages but I didn't see anything. I haven't been around much lately so forgive me if I missed it.
Anyhow, I love that someone asked a question of the band relating to fans that have different beliefs. And mostly I was disappointed in Eddie's answer. I think he mentioned an important point at the very end, however it seemed he was more interesting in pleasing the audience, which is what he gets paid to do so well in concerts.
He mentioned that he respects other people's opinions and that he hopes they create discussion, but I wonder ow honest that answer was. It appeared to me that he is more interested in 'preaching to the choir'. And in all honesty I htink that sucks. I think that attitude is the exact attitude he professes to hate so much. He professes to hate the controlled news which leads to the controlled thought and the controlled beliefs on the people...but it seems that perhaps he is for it, just not the current message. He is certainly a well-informed rockstar, and has deep opinions. I would think that he'd welcome with open arms fans that disagree with the band on any number of issues. That they'd welcome the discussions and debate that come along with that. That they'd actually prefer to have fans that represent a large cross-section of the world and political beliefs because that is the only way to make real change...not preaching to the choir. Without out it, Eddie is no more than Jerry Falwell.
So, what do you all think? Perhaps in that format it is too difficult to express all your thoughts, so little time. Perhaps I misevaluated the statement. But all in all, I was certainly disappoited.
I like the debate. I like talking about issues with people that feel passionately about their positions, despite being oposite on mine. Sure, we have some heated exchanges, but those are a necessary evil to get past.
yeah well maybe PJ isnt the band for you then.
I personally thought Eddie possesed restaint on his anwer. He much like the rest of the band wernt trying to piss ppl off, which they often seem to do cause they are relativley open minded and polite.
but how long have you been a PJ fan? You couldnt see this kind of response? As long as I knew PJ they have been on the side of rightousness (non-republican to say the least.) First brodcasted live performance was MTV unplugged were Eddie wrote " Pro-Choice on his arm with thick black magic marker.
You just have to research a little more before falling in love a band, that is ofcourse your not interested in there politics. I mean I dont think there is a semi-pop band out there that is more distinctive about there politics then PJ. Half Eddies lyrics are anti-Bush, which is good to me but not you obviously.
Maybe you like there music but are an idiot, which I mean alot of ppl are, so dont be ashamed half the ppl in the world are apsent minded.. cause half the world supports the Woody Allen of politics, and only the other half just use good ole fashioned common sense.
Not everyone can be atleast average intelligance... you play your part.

You're funny, maybe even cute. Now having an abortion is righteous. That's wicked cool.
Help me please. Is it irony when someone who lists their occupation as "Park maintience (not a spelling bee contest winner." refers to other people as idiots?

I've seen a few posts on this board over the past few years by conservatives who have met Ed and mentioned that they disagreed with his politics, and Ed has been very respectful, friendly, and eager to discuss their differing viewpoints, so I don't think he was saying that just to please the crowd.
He keeps talking, I suspect, not because he's trying to indoctrinate anyone, but because he feels like his side is getting drowned out. With even supposedly "ultra-liberal" outlets such as CNN and the New York Times joining in the cheerleading for our rush to war (who published Judith Miller's work again?), and supposedly "ultra-liberal" politicians like Kerry and Hillary Clinton voting to authorize the use of force, it's quite easy to believe that real progressive voices are not being heard. Ed's lucky enough to have a little soapbox to stand on, I'm glad he's making use of it.
And yeah, the Falwell comparison was a little overboard. All indications are that Ed is at least reasonably sane, and I think it's safe to say that his audience is a good bit more diverse than the one at Thomas Road Baptist.
Came across this old thread today. Been reading more on here given the upcoming election. Very interesting. I find your posts very mature. Id be curious to read those posts you mention where Ed has met some politically conservative fans and kindly respected their view points

She was a great combination of compassion, intelligence, and badass-ness.
Certainly seemed to match the description you had of her. Seemed like a very pleasant, respectful individual.
I'm sure she has PJ cranked to 10 wherever she is
