Gas Tax Holiday

Top of my head: Since prices are going up on gas because of reduced supply, a token reduction like this counteracts what should be happening by now. People using less fuel. A band-aid which I can't imagine is there for any other reason than appealing to voters by handing them a couple of refund bucks.
And about as visionary as Bush's famous "we need an energy policy to encourage consumption" a few years back. That statement from a leading politician still makes my jaw drop.

We must use less fuel. Encouraging consumption through tax rebates sound like precisely what shouldn't be done to me.

    Peace

It's a Bandaid, but it'll only last through the summer. Summer is when families travel. I have a family. I would like to travel by car this summer. I'd like a holiday. Wreck and ruin won't happen if the Bandaid is taken off in a short period of time. Obama calls the holiday a ploy, but he voted for one himself. From CBS News: ...when he was an Illinois legislator, voting at least three times in favor of temporarily lifting the state's 5 percent sales tax on gasoline.

The tax holiday was finally approved during a special session in June of 2000, when Illinois motorists were furious that gas prices had just topped $2 a gallon in Chicago.

During one debate, he joked that he wanted signs on gas pumps in his district to say, “Senator Obama reduced your gasoline prices.”

He doesn't like that Hillary beat him to his own ploy.

Me, I'd be happy to get a little break and not really do anything any harm.

Oh, and it is a message board so don't deviate too far from the message board speak.

Does anything really work. I mean if a government decides to cut their gas tax by say 5 cents would there be anything stopping the gas companies from just raising the price of gas by the same amount? I mean if they already know people are willing to pay the extra 5 cents what would stop them from keeping the prices just as high and making more money?

There is absolutely nothing keeping them from raising prices during a tax break.
I would almost expect them to do it. If they could implement the tax break tomorrow (say it's 18 cents), you don't think that by the end of the summer the price of gas (pre-tax) wouldn't go up another 18cents anyways?

    As I said before...

Are we Americans are willing to sell out for even the least amount of money. Apparently, we really DO place the value of money (even if it's chump change) over all else, don't we?

Gas prices also increase in the summer due to the need for additional additives to be added to the gasoline due to higher ambient temperatures which affects emissions.....it is not just a ploy to take advantage of travellers.......

We salivate like Pavlov's dog whenever we hear the words 'Tax cuts'. We are as gay for tax cuts as Senator Larry Craig is for man ass.

I judge hypocrite assholes who persecute gays because they're too far in the closet to admit it to themselves.

Of course I'd spend money where ever I went. Here's another side to the gas tax vacation. It's not just about a tank of gas. Prices are rising on everything right now pretty quickly, partially due to shipping costs. A gas tax holiday wouldn't just give you a few extra dollars in your hand due to lower gas prices, it would also stave off some of the ridiculously rising prices of food, etc. It would be an across-the board savings that involves a lot more than gasoline. A gas tax holiday would help me feed my family, as well. Not for long, granted, but it might help us get over some of the worst of the recession--at least give us a minor break from it without undue harm since it's not a forever deal. If it were forever, then the bellyaching some people are doing over it would make sense. But, for a short period...it could be a good thing for nearly all involved. FDR called it "priming the pump." Sometimes, a little priming is just what is needed.

And Obama's core base are supposedly well-to-do, out-of-touch snobs. Nice insults, but both "observations" are just lies used to score points and shore up the "us" against "them." Well-reasoned discussion? Where?

it isn't a lie and it wasn't an insult. Its called exit polling. You should check it out. Clinton's most reliable, core support comes from older and lesser educated voters. Its observable, measued data, and it shows when her supporters fall for some dumb shit like the "gas tax holiday". Its a political ploy designed to hoodwink her uneducated base.
It has also been measured and verified that the more educated voter tends to go with Obama.

"out of touch snobs", however just may be construed as a gross generalization and an insult however. Just sayin'.

Yes... and the well educated, high I.Q. types voted for Bush *TWICE*... because they thought he was going to get Jesus to come back by ending abortion and banning gay marriages.
    Okay... it makes sense, now.
