From CBS News: ...when he was an Illinois legislator, voting at least three times in favor of temporarily lifting the state's 5 percent sales tax on gasoline.

The tax holiday was finally approved during a special session in June of 2000, when Illinois motorists were furious that gas prices had just topped $2 a gallon in Chicago.

During one debate, he joked that he wanted signs on gas pumps in his district to say, “Senator Obama reduced your gasoline prices.”

He doesn't like that Hillary beat him to his own ploy.

Me, I'd be happy to get a little break and not really do anything any harm.
and let me ask you a questions if you go ona vacation would you be spending money where ever you go? i bet you would. does anyone here not think that maybe i fpeople hav emoney in their pocket they might go and spend it which would increase money from sales taxs to the government.

Gas prices also increase in the summer due to the need for additional additives to be added to the gasoline due to higher ambient temperatures which affects emissions.....it is not just a ploy to take advantage of travellers.......

We salivate like Pavlov's dog whenever we hear the words 'Tax cuts'. We are as gay for tax cuts as Senator Larry Craig is for man ass.

Of course I'd spend money where ever I went. Here's another side to the gas tax vacation. It's not just about a tank of gas. Prices are rising on everything right now pretty quickly, partially due to shipping costs. A gas tax holiday wouldn't just give you a few extra dollars in your hand due to lower gas prices, it would also stave off some of the ridiculously rising prices of food, etc. It would be an across-the board savings that involves a lot more than gasoline. A gas tax holiday would help me feed my family, as well. Not for long, granted, but it might help us get over some of the worst of the recession--at least give us a minor break from it without undue harm since it's not a forever deal. If it were forever, then the bellyaching some people are doing over it would make sense. But, for a short period...it could be a good thing for nearly all involved. FDR called it "priming the pump." Sometimes, a little priming is just what is needed.

Apparently some do. Personally i find it as no surprise that hillary clinton's core base, according to all exit polling are old and uneducated.

And Obama's core base are supposedly well-to-do, out-of-touch snobs. Nice insults, but both "observations" are just lies used to score points and shore up the "us" against "them." Well-reasoned discussion? Where?

it isn't a lie and it wasn't an insult. Its called exit polling. You should check it out. Clinton's most reliable, core support comes from older and lesser educated voters. Its observable, measued data, and it shows when her supporters fall for some dumb shit like the "gas tax holiday". Its a political ploy designed to hoodwink her uneducated base.
It has also been measured and verified that the more educated voter tends to go with Obama.

"out of touch snobs", however just may be construed as a gross generalization and an insult however. Just sayin'.

Yes... and the well educated, high I.Q. types voted for Bush *TWICE*... because they thought he was going to get Jesus to come back by ending abortion and banning gay marriages.
    Okay... it makes sense, now.

Not exactly. That would be the so-called "religious right" that were hoodwinked into voting for bush based on two relatively unimportant issues. The "religious right" is made up of educated and uneducated voters alike, and it is worth pointing out that the "religious right" is not the dependable voting block they once were.

Six months after the gas tax holiday in Illinois Obama then changed his position and voted against continuing the holiday. His expressed concern at the time was people such as you and your family were not receiving a happy little break; neither savings nor infrastructure improvement. That instead big oil simply raises their prices to compensate. This transfers public money for your roads to the pocketbooks of big oil, and therein is the harm.

This makes her version less bad than McCain's. But the savings still don't get to you.

This from a Princeton economics professor (who has been critical of Obama):

"Econ 101 tax incidence theory: if the supply of a good is more or less unresponsive to the price, the price to consumers will always rise until the quantity demanded falls to match the quantity supplied. Cut taxes, and all that happens is that the pretax price rises by the same amount."

Senator Clinton is being mighty disingenuous when she talks about a gas tax holiday for THIS summer along with a windfall profits tax on the oil companies. She damn well knows that the current president would convert to Islam before he signed any bill that increased taxes on oil companies. I know that because her staff has said as much to the press:

"We know that it (a windfall profits tax) isn't going to happen this year, but we feel that it's a good issue for us politically."

It's not a verbatim quote; if you look hard enough you can find it.

It would also mean a whopping $28 savings over the course of the summer driving season. Live it up and go on a Monkey Wards shopping spree.

Almost every economist has stated that it will have NO effect on food prices either. Distributors have set their quarterly prices and they will not come down...even once the summer prices go up.

It helps no one, it won't do anything for the economy, and it will cost us all more money in the long run.

    Hooray for dumb politics!

then she should put this in action...she's still in the senate, perhaps she should put up or shut up...

I guess the Democratic leadership is not supporting a "gas tax holiday"....

Reid Is Likely to Keep Gas Tax Out of Debate
Legislation on Increasing Prices Will Sidestep Issue That Splits Clinton, Obama By John Stanton

    May 6, 2008

When Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) rolls out his party’s much anticipated gas price legislation later this week, one element that won’t be included is any sort of “gas tax holiday” provision.

    Think about it...
    In my case...
    I drive a Dodge Durango.
    20 gallon tank
    15 MPG (combined Street/Freeway)
Range is about 300 miles per tank
    18 cent tax per gallon.
    ---
    .18 x 20 gallons = $3.60 saving of a $75.00 bill = $71.40 at the pump.
I normally refuel about once every 2 weeks or twice a month which is $7.20 off of $150.00.
    3 Summer months (Jun/Jul/Aug) means I will save $7.20 x 3 months = $21.60
    $21.60 off of a bill that'll normally cost me $150.00 x 3 months = $450.00
    ...
Works out to $21.60 / 91 days of Summer or a savings of 23 cents per day.
Round it up to One quarter per day.
    ...
Thanx, Ms. Clinton... but, no thanx. Instead, put my chump change towards fixing that damn pothole on Lakewood Blvd... bitch.

of course it is pandering but that is what all polticians do during election time. Obama is pandering, McCain is pandering and so is Clinton. oh and by the way Obama is also still in the senate too so why is he not bring about change yet.

why hasn't Ms. Clinton not brought this Gas Tax Holiday to the Senate...?

If it's such a super-duper idea, I'm sure it will pass with ease...Right..?

I don't see how Hillary isn't being blown up even more about this subject. Not only because it will only save the average Joe ~$25, but because she stated that it will be a relief for farmers who are biting huge increases in their number one farm input... um... last I checked farmers don't pay taxes for on-farm fuel to begin with. How can she be so uninformed about this subject? She is the one who proposed the measure.... you'd think she would have done her homework.
