I may be easier if you told me any benefit...other than the $28 it may save the average American over the entire summer.

I posted this in another thread, and I think it is pretty spot on. A gas tax holiday would be nice at the time, however you know it is short lived and will go back up shortly. It is like having a one night stand with a supermodel with the clap---at the moment it it quite enjoyable, but in the long run you are going to pay for it.

I'm for anything that reduces taxes...even if it's just for a little while.

brilliant idea!!! Congress cuts the gas tax temporarily (what is it, like 19 cents or something)... oil companies cut their prices by 14 cents (!!!) and keep the difference.

But the money is coming out of the funding that goes to fixing highways, interstates, bridges, etc. When the holiday is over it's going to cost us all more money in the long run.
So I guess I'm for anything that reduces taxes...if it makes sense.

In terms of having some tangible, far-reaching effect on economic turnaround, or even relief, it really isn't going to produce results. But anyone arguing against letting people keep more of their own money during hard times, and enabling government looting show their true colors.

yes and thats exactly why this idea is bullshit. mccain and clinton know this is the case yet they know most people are too stupid to do their research after hearing about a tax cut. i mean think about it- how many people are going to object to something that saves them money.

this is why obama is now my definite choice for president- he realizes that this will hurt us and is speaking out against it. clinton would rather trick us into thinking she's helping us.

I take that back. I'd love to see a market-driven solution to crumbling roads. All the third ring suburban commuters would find out just how much their roads cost.

Of course I do. There is no way I'm getting comensurate value. Here in this state we have one of the highest gas taxes in the country and there are plenty of problems with the roads. Higher taxes don't automatically mean better services.

Clinton and McCain will help the oil companies, hurt the populace, and gain political stature. They know consumers are willing to pay the cost of gas with the tax included. Without the tax big oil will raise prices to match that cost. The general public will lose the benefit of that income. Big oil will put it in their pocket.
  • as previously stated, the proposed gas tax holiday would come at the expense of the federal fund that pays for national highway infrastructure. highways, bridges, etc. remember the bridge collapse in minnesota last summer? remember the subsequent stories about the number of bridges nationwide that are in need of repair? building new roads notwithstanding, existing highways need repairs on a regular, if not annual basis, especially those in states that experienced a harsh winter.

safety aside, the money lost from the fund could result in the loss of over 300,000 jobs nationwide.

a gas tax suspension that is instituted without a windfall profits tax on the oil companies would be a bad idea, and i'm glad that one candidate is willing to talk about that with the american people.

    Well said.
Let's just hope that the average American will be able to understand/comprehend this very idea and not get caught up in what is spoon-fed to them by the Clinton and McCain camps.

Top of my head: Since prices are going up on gas because of reduced supply, a token reduction like this counteracts what should be happening by now. People using less fuel. A band-aid which I can't imagine is there for any other reason than appealing to voters by handing them a couple of refund bucks.
And about as visionary as Bush's famous "we need an energy policy to encourage consumption" a few years back. That statement from a leading politician still makes my jaw drop.

We must use less fuel. Encouraging consumption through tax rebates sound like precisely what shouldn't be done to me.

    Peace

It's a Bandaid, but it'll only last through the summer. Summer is when families travel. I have a family. I would like to travel by car this summer. I'd like a holiday. Wreck and ruin won't happen if the Bandaid is taken off in a short period of time. Obama calls the holiday a ploy, but he voted for one himself. From CBS News: ...when he was an Illinois legislator, voting at least three times in favor of temporarily lifting the state's 5 percent sales tax on gasoline.

The tax holiday was finally approved during a special session in June of 2000, when Illinois motorists were furious that gas prices had just topped $2 a gallon in Chicago.

During one debate, he joked that he wanted signs on gas pumps in his district to say, “Senator Obama reduced your gasoline prices.”

He doesn't like that Hillary beat him to his own ploy.

Me, I'd be happy to get a little break and not really do anything any harm.

Does anything really work. I mean if a government decides to cut their gas tax by say 5 cents would there be anything stopping the gas companies from just raising the price of gas by the same amount? I mean if they already know people are willing to pay the extra 5 cents what would stop them from keeping the prices just as high and making more money?

There is absolutely nothing keeping them from raising prices during a tax break.
I would almost expect them to do it. If they could implement the tax break tomorrow (say it's 18 cents), you don't think that by the end of the summer the price of gas (pre-tax) wouldn't go up another 18cents anyways?

    As I said before...

Are we Americans are willing to sell out for even the least amount of money. Apparently, we really DO place the value of money (even if it's chump change) over all else, don't we?
