    jeff went to say something more but then hesitated. he looked past johnny as if looking for something or someone.

    the change in tone in jeff's voice alarmed johnny a little. he heard it before and he didn't like it. jeff sounded like he was lost and all johnny wanted to do was to hold him and tell him everything would be okay.
