can we edit now, please......I think we all have matured.....and, after all, we're poets, and need to make sure that we haven't made a big blunder in front of our peers......for example.....we can't write a profound peom, and post it, and then see some glaring error in it.....and add an addendum with the correction......it's jus so wrong....!!!!! we are the least volatile of your wards.....nad as such we deserve.....in fact, we reserve the right to EDIT......please give us back our editing rights.......or we shall shun youse both......anyone that wants edit facilities in the peotry section, please sign this petty petition.......thanks......Sir ISN....... ;)

    Edit Edit Edit
Down the street you can hear her scream youre a disgrace
As she slams the door in his drunken face
    And now he stands outside
And all the neighbours start to gossip and drool
He cries oh, girl you must be mad,
What happened to the sweet love you and me had?
Against the door he leans and starts a scene,
And his tears fall and burn the garden green

I understand the reason for non excisting editbutton on this page, when you have decided to deliver a poem or whatever, it should be finished and there shouldn't be any need of changing the substance.
But I'm not totally against an editbutton...would be less afraid of posting then, I guess.
To worry about tomorrow doesn't make it easier,
    it only makes today worse.

Doesn't bandwidth get wasted when people repost poems again and again because they're not able to edit them?

Editing would be nice at those times when I spell a word wrong and don't notice it until it's posted. :p

What was the justification behind eliminating it in the first place?

Didn't some unfortunate person have a mental breakdown last year? I think it might have been related to that?

I don't see how editing can cause someone to have a mental breakdown.....but, please, if you value my sanity Kat & Sea, lettuce edit.....see what I mean?

kat and sea said that people were editing their inciteful comments out of threads ALL over the board, after they'd been read by thier intended target... and then cleaned up to look all innocent

not just here, though it was rampant, and it wasn't the effect of one poor unfortunate soul losing his or her mind... <wince>

i actually learned that trick from an old dog, and whatever, whatever... birds of a feather, and whatnot :)

i hope they keep the edit function disfunctional
it's nice to see the process, and like that one person said

when you have a poem, it should be done before you post it

    spell check notwithstanding

I have never argued against the process of writers editing essays, papers, novels, etc. However, for me, poetry is an expression of oneself-whatever that means; soul, mind, whatever it is that differentiates one of us from another-and therefore, editing poetry (spellcheck doesn't count) seems false. Your poem is what it is. If you didn't mean it, why did you write it? Let it go. The purest art is an inevitable overflow of oneself. There was no option, no decision, no crafting, no molding, nothing but a release in written form. To edit that would be to regret, and as we all know, it makes much more sense to live in the present tense...

A text is always an edition and never absolute: it is a process and not a product. A denial of the fluidity of text is anti-art.

Of course, but I would say that subsequent text/editing is an ADDITION to the original. It cannot/should not replace the initial effort.

Umm, I'm not sure there is such a thing as an originary text. And the first version published/posted isn't necessarily that. Textual editors have a headache trying to second-guess absolute originary authorial intention. Where does a text begin?

I care not for publication/posting. Putting pen to paper happens for a reason. Bob Dylan said that he regrets the fact that he ever recorded his music. For example, his live versions of "Tangled Up in Blue" consistently change-they are fluid. My point is that you should not discount the first time he sang it. It is as true as the last time he sang it. There is no "version". In my mind editing is an attempt to erase these previous "versions" and paint them as wrong or incorrect or not well thought out, etc.

But don't we write/edit/construct a text just by reading it? Doesn't a text change in its associations and subtexts each time we go to it? Aren't we, as Ed wisely said, part-owners of a text? Don't we determinine and inevitably change its meaning, over and over again, whether we read or misread a text? The meaning of The Iliad changes from generation to generation and we can never know how it was received, interpreted or even intended (or if it even had one author or period of composition) in its "original" context(s).
