If you don't like his voice and think he is boring then you probably won't like any of his stuff. His music sounds much the same now as it always has. Unless you heard Trans or one of his 80s synth albums, you've probably already heard something like his normal style.

If you don't like After the Gold Rush, Harvest, Rust Never Sleeps, On The Beach, Zuma or Tonight is the Night then you have no chance.

But yes, you will be missing out. As for individual songs, Helpless, Cortez the Killer, Heart of Gold, Hey Hey, My My, Rockin' in the free world, After the gold rush are all amazing.

i would suggest you try Cortez the Killer, Down by the River or Scenery.
Down in the hole, Jesus tries to crack a smile beneath another shovel load.
  • Neil Young had always left me indifferent - until five or six months ago, when I decided I'd listen to 'Only Love Can Break Your Heart' in the dark at 2 in the morning, whilst staring at an old photograph of my ex wife. I cried my eyes out for hours... and that's when I suddenly 'got' Neil Young's music. I've loved his music ever since.

After listening just now because of this thread, I have to reassert my opinion that Cortez the Killer is one of the best songs EVER. The version on Weld is just incredible.

True, but I always dismissed Pearl Jam based on a couple of songs that I'd heard on the radio, until I delved deeper.

    Thanks for the suggestions.

Absolutely. I'll maintain that Weld disc 2 is the single greatest live cd ever made.

    1. Cortez The Killer
    2. Powderfinger
    3. Love And Only Love
    4. Rockin' In The Free World
    5. Like A Hurricane
    6. Farmer John
    7. Tonight's The Night
    8. Roll Another Number

Okay, I could do without Farmer John, but the others are perhaps the definitive live versions of some of his best songs. Pure musical bliss.

I think Neil Young's a pretty underrated guitarist, and his lyrics are spectacular at getting the point across and really making a statement, but like Bob Dylan, some like the voice, others not at all.

I love pretty much all of Neils material. But if you feel that way you'll probably continue feeling that way.Unless you start to feel his vibe.If you catch the wave then you'll never fall back.I recommend the song I'm The Ocean from Mirrorball.Thats the record P'J played on.Thats also one of his deepest songs.Just check out the lyrics if nothing else............People my age they don't do the things I do.

Haven't listened to him for a little while now, but he's one of my all time favorites.

And by the way, I didn't think he was any good at first either. Then all of a sudden it just began to click.
