I just picked up a Neil Young & Crazy Horse tape, yes, thats right tape at a music store for like $3 the other day, definitely worth it, since my car has a radio and a tape deck, and I'd listen to Neil over the radio any day

let me be bored all the time

    agreed

    neil young is superb
Down the street you can hear her scream youre a disgrace
As she slams the door in his drunken face
    And now he stands outside
And all the neighbours start to gossip and drool
He cries oh, girl you must be mad,
What happened to the sweet love you and me had?
Against the door he leans and starts a scene,
And his tears fall and burn the garden green

To the original poster, all the songs mentioned are excellent tracks.

To really get "blown away" with Neil's signature guitar playing, try listening to Like a Hurricane. Eight minutes of beautifully ragged bliss.

i agree. i could always take mr. young or leave him. then one morning after dropping some girl off at her apt. i put in disc two of Weld ! i drove around for three hours with that disc alone. then i grabbed some food, ate, and drove around for another hour listening to Like a hurricane. ive never been the same since. awesome.

the first 100 times i heard it , it brought me to tears and gave me chills, now i have heard it 1000's of times and still get chills. my old band played it and it became a staple of our live show. i would get chills watching my guitar player play lead on that song. i would just go to the side of the stage and and drink a few beers while he wailed on it. great song.

    long live Young Neil !!!
    Peace, Love.

my very favorite musician of all time... up there with dylan as the best songwriter tho i would agree that neither is the best singer... if you cant get past his voice tho then i cant really think of anything to recommend... harvest is a solid album all the way through tho...

you cant even enjoy mirrorball with the PJ part of it being so prominent??

ive heard alot of hate for eddies voice over the years but never for neil... this thread ANGERS ME!!!!!

    but to each his own

  • I've always thought the same thing but jamie uk recommended a good song for me. I accidently deleted it though. Jamie, what was the song called?

    Jamieeeeee?
  • He's very warm and genuine, live. A lot of his songs really come alive in a concert setting. I think it's only then that you can truly "get" Neil.

Man I love Neil Young. Shakey is one of the best books I've ever read and I haven't even finished it yet. I love that he just writes what he wants and doesn't care if the whole world likes it or hates it. That's a true artist to me.

It is like so many have said it is not about his harmonies it is about the feeling he portrays and his ability to connect with the listener.

bob dylan is a poet neil young is a great lyricist in the sense that he makes his songs so easy to connect to.

Listen to what he is saying.

For some great soft songs for a new listener
don't let it bring you down
    helpless
    old man

    for a rocker
    like a hurricane

The problem is once you "get" neil.... genrally you are addicted, but it is a drug i'm willing to live with :)

he means that people shouldnt need a thread to be convinced that neil young's any good, they should just know.

but would he rather the OP had said "Neil Young is just shite and I know you are all wrong, there's nothing you could say that would make me like him"?

you know ive beem listening to neil young since i was 14 years old. he is the author of my favouritest song ever. sometimes i'm head over heels for him. other times he annoys me. it depends on my mood. then... i put on zuma and when stupid girl comes on i smile. i listen to only love can break your heart and im gone. don't let it bring you down and lotta love just send me some place else. neil young has been the constant in my life and i am thankful for his presence.
you shouldnt need to be convinced of someone's worthiness in your musical lexicon. they should just be(for whatever reason), and you should be thankful for their presence, as i am for neil young. he is there when i need him. and there when i don't, but still i know he's there.. :)

Listening to Neil Young for the first time is sorta like having your first beer. It doesn't taste great right away, but soon you can't live with out it.

Which is your favourite song then? :) I'm intrigued now.

I can pinpoint my favourite Neil MOMENT. From 1:58-2:15 on Helpless, there is some of the greatest music ever recorded. Like one of the top 10 music moments for me, and I listen to a LOT of music :)

It doesn't get mentioned much but his unplugged album is fantastic. Killer versions of Helpless, Stringman, Needle and the damage done, hurricane, Pocahontas (sp), ....great album.

Old Laughing Lady is very good there too.

My favorite version of Old Laughing Lady is actually the solo version done by neil at the end of the DVD Heart of Gold.

Just Neil, his guitar alone in ryman auditorium with the film rolling.

It just sounded awesome. I wish i had an mp3 of it.

Weve been through some things together
With trunks of memories still to come
We found things to do in stormy weather
    Long may you run.

    Long may you run.
    Long may you run.
    Although these changes have come
With your chrome heart shining in the sun
    Long may you run.

Well, it was back in blind river in 1962
When I last saw you alive
But we missed that shift on the long decline
    Long may you run.

    Long may you run.
    Long may you run.
    Although these changes have come
With your chrome heart shining in the sun
    Long may you run.

Maybe the beach boys have got you now
With those waves singing caroline no
Rollin down that empty ocean road
Gettin to the surf on time.

    Long may you run.
    Long may you run.
    Although these changes have come

Your thread title has already painted you into a corner regarding Neil Young. If you don't like him, you don't like him.
    Which came first,
the bad idea or me befallen by it?
