listening to Who's next gave me a new perspective of what is possible on the drum kit.

Neil Peart
Billy Cobham (but, umm, he is the best
)
Tim Alexander
Stephen Perkins

Saw him live. You'd think watching an old man starting a drum solo by tapping his cymbals with his fingernails for 4 minutes would be really boring. But no.BinFrog wrote:Billy Cobham (but, umm, he is the best

exactly. some of those songs are just incredible. i think i remember "my wife" being especially good for moon. i once heard his style described as a set of drums being thrown down a flight of stairs. he was wicked.Van '98, Sea I+II '00, Sea '01, Sea II '02, Van '03, Gorge, Van, Cal, Edm '05, Bos I+II, Phi I+II, DC, SF II+III, Port, Gorge I+II '06, DC, NY I+II '08, Sea I+II, Van, Ridge , LA III+IV' 09, Indy '10, Cal, Van '11, Lond, Van, Sea '13, Memphis '14, RRHOF '17, Sea I+II '18, Van I+II, Vegas I+II, Sea I+II '240 -

Buddy definitely needs a mention. He was the BEST drummer ever probably in terms of ability but he didn't make my list because I don't really like his music. I picked a bunch of other jazz drummers over him because their work, whether as technically accomplished or not, does a lot more for me on the albums they're on. Elvin Jones' drumming with Coltrane is just so important to the overall sound for me. I haven't heard anywhere near as much from Rich but he's not a drummer I listen to the music of, he's the kind of drummer I watch videos on youtube of in amazement, if that makes any senserestlesssoul wrote:buddy rich was a phenomenal drummer too, i had him in my list but took him out
