Jimi Hendrix - Band of Gypsys

Damn right. Hendrix has lots of great live albums. I also highly recommend Live at Fillmore East - which is the rest of the 2 shows from Which Band of Gypsys was taken, Live at Woodstock (a little sloppy, but tons of energy), Live at the Oakland Coliseum (only available through the official website - it's a good quality audience recording), and Live at Berkely.

Aside from Hendrix, I'm surprised nobody has listed Allman Brothers - Live at Fillmore East.

I would also recommend Funkadelic Live at Meadowbrook. It's the only live recording of early Funkadelic with Eddie Hazel on guitar I'm aware of. It was their first show with a new drummer, and he screws up a lot, but it's worth hearing for Eddie Hazel's guitar work.

RHCP live at Hyde Park is great, although the Live at Slane DVD is probably a little bit better.

Rory Gallagher's Irish Tour 74 is also great if you like blues rock.

The Who's Live at Leeds is good. and of course most of PJ's bootlegs but Im partial to the 2000 european boots. especially lisbon. Led Zepplins how the west was won isn't bad either. oh and Nirvana's mtv unplugged and the from muddy waters one.
These cuts are leaving creases. Trace the scars to fit the pieces, to tell the story, you don't need to say a word.

Get the Hendrix Box of Gypsies 6 CD set.

Get Live at Leeds by John Martyn. (You could get The Who's Live at Leeds, too, but I'd get John Martyn's Live at Leeds without fail.)

Get It's Too Late To Stop Now by Van Morrison.

Get Dream Letter: Live in London 1968 by Tim Buckley.

    Get Jazz at Massey Hall.

    They'll do, for starters.

It's edited to hell, though. I wish Kramer had left it alone. Audio glitches me arse! The box set demonstrates that many of the highlights from all four shows at the Fillmore are still to be officially released. There's still one BoG Machine Gun of four, in the can. It's from the first show on December 31st 1969. It's pretty spirited, though Buddy gets a bit carried away with his doobie-doobie-doo scat; but it's certainly better than the second version, which made Live at the Fillmore East along with an edit of the fourth version (January 1st 1970, second show).

Ah, found a link to an audience recording, featured in the box set:

thats about all i can add to what's already been said.

the drive by truckers should make a live album they are great live.

Yep. Neil Young Live at Massey Hall '71 is excellent too.

The Truckers have an out of print live album (Alabama Ass Whuppin'), and a excellent live DVD - Live at the 40 Watt. There's a few songs from the DVD on iTunes.

You can download Alabama Ass Whuppin' here, if anything, its worth it for 18 Wheels of Love:

    Other good live discs:
Dylan - Live '75 - Rolling Thunder Revue
Grateful Dead - Go To Nassau, Hundred Year Hall, Live/Dead
Social Distortion - Live at the Roxy
Lucinda Williams - Live at the Fillmore
"You're no help," he told the lime. This was unfair. It was only a lime; there was nothing special about it at all. It was doing the best it could.
