Is Larse Ulrich supposed to be a good drummer?

Im a huge metallica fan and honestly, he has just lost it with age, he used to be good in the 80's and anyone who says that he won them over live must be talking about the wherever i may roam tour from 92 and previous tours becuase i have seen them live twice in 03 and 04 and he was easily the weakest link but as previously stated its expected because of the speed of the music and his age.
and yes Pantera wipes the fucking floor with metallica, after sabbath pantera is the best metal band in history.{if (work != 0) {
work = work + 1;
sleep = sleep - work * 10;}
else if (work >= 0) {

he's always been pilloried, well the last 15 years anyway, but like you say...his contribution is much more than simply drumming.
And we all like artistic integrity don't we? Rather than artistic snobbery and perfection ? Don't we?
Really, this whole thread or tired, pointeless, cliched point is about as relevant as saying "oh that guy who invented the really light footballs they use nowadays is much more excellent than the twat who invented that old brown one with the laces"
I think you're missing the point entirely mate. My post was meant not to bash Lars, or call him a douche or a dick (I didn't even know he was one). I know very little about Metallica; only what I've heard them play. That's what my post is about, Lars' drum playing.
My only point is that after so many years of hearing Metallica being called Genius, I expected Lars' drumming to be better, and it was just about passable. Many metal drummers set the bar extremely high. Lars isn't one of them.
I do respect his contribution to the band and the fact he is a driving force etc. We can say the same things about Matt Cameron, but I often (not always) find him sub-par as a drummer as well. But that's an oft-flogged dead horse.'We're learning songs for baby Jesus' birthday. His mum and dad were Merry and Joseph. He had a bed made of clay and the three kings bought him Gold, Frankenstein and Merv as presents.'

Sure, I understand Mark. Truth is bands aren't really about drummers, or how good the drummers are, that's why the old cliche of replacing drummers every tour or album came about in the first place I guess. Matt Cameron is good, but I don't listen to Pearl Jam and go..."wow, that's amazing drumming"..I doubt anyone does really. That's why Pearl Jam have gotten away with swapping drummers so many times....truth is it doesn't make much difference at all who's playing, as long as they are of a passable standard then they'll do
That's why they're at the back I sposeI came, I saw, I concurred.....0 -

swings and roundabouts amigo.oh scary... 40000 morbidly obese christians wearing fanny packs invading europe is probably the least scariest thing since I watched an edited version of The Care Bears movie in an extremely brightly lit cinema.0 -

Where one is born, and into what family, is nothing to be either proud or ashamed of amigo. It's something which is totally beyond the control of everyone.
I simply meant Lars is like 'us' because he loved rock music as a kid, he lived for it...and he followed it on ....is all I meant.
I happen to think Noel is ok, it's Liam I think is a dick, and that's nothing to do with where he was born or that he's working class like me, it's because he's come across in every single interview, performance or portrayal I've ever seen, heard or read of him, as being a complete arrogant twat. And to top it off, I don't like his singing, and the songs he writes are really shit. It's misplaced arrogance, he believes his own hype.
To me he is just lucky Noel is his brother.I came, I saw, I concurred.....0 -

Danny Carey is better than both Vinny Paul and Lars.0
-
On a side note I actually find Danny Carey's drumming a little bit too distracting and kind of 'jarring' to a lot of the songs Tool produces. He lacks the fluidity of someone like Cameron who does amazing shit but you don't realise it because it is so subtle.
Always thought Lars was a pretty average drummer. Good drummers know how to make their kit sound good and Lars' drum sound has always sounded like shit (to me atleast).0 -
I've always found Metallica a bit overrated, and technically...i think Dimebag could've taken the whole band on by himself.
if we are comparing Metallica to Pantera, I'd have to go with Pantera. They have much more of a "fuck you", metal kind of attitude...and they never once had fans questioning their integrity...much like Metallica has had.
All in all, my opinion is that Metallica are some poster faced, metal boys who had good intentions when they release Kill 'Em All...Metallica was pretty tough in the eighties, and were a true metal band...
I just get annoyed at the hyp of Metallica. People treat them like they're gods and they aren't...they shadow way too many bands, Pantera was one that deserved a lot more respect, and not because of Dime's death.7/2/06 - Denver, CO

Good drummer,
but what shitty bands.
At my last job, I asked a girl to listen to something for me and I gave her my copy of Vitalogy...came back 5 minutes later and said "Ew, Pearl Jam? They suck. You wanna hear some good, deep music?"
she brought me a copy of 'Angels and Airwaves'...I proceeded to listen to Vitalogy.

But seeing them on Jools Holland the other night just confirms my suspicions that Ulrich is sort of rubbish. He totally fudged the introduction to the new single, his timing was up and down, all over the place, and he POUNDS the drums as hard as he can trying to cover up the fact that he has poor technique. I'm no fan but I gave it the benefit of the doubt, hoping to be amazed. After so many years, I should've been.
On the OTHER HAND, I bought Reinventing Hell: The Best of Pantera the other day. It's no less than musical brilliance. The drumming, the bass playing and the guitar hooks are completely brilliant and show great skill. Vinnie Paul is a monster. I'm not a seasoned metal fan YET, but at the moment, it seems that Pantera wipe the floor with Metallica.
Flame away!

Listen to the bass pedal."I remember one night at Muzdalifa with nothing but the sky overhead, I lay awake amid sleeping Muslim brothers and I learned that pilgrims from every land — every colour, and class, and rank; high officials and the beggar alike — all snored in the same language"0 -

I can't listen to the link as I'm on public computer with no speakers. I remember hearing Mastodon last year but can't remember what it sounded like. Did they not play on the Reading Sunday with Pearl Jam, or am I wrong? If so, I saw 'em live
Either way, having got quite into Pantera in recent days, I can't wait to hear Mastodon. Hearing technical metal drumming with a lot of bass work gives me a semi (by the sea).
Gonna try Sepultura next.'We're learning songs for baby Jesus' birthday. His mum and dad were Merry and Joseph. He had a bed made of clay and the three kings bought him Gold, Frankenstein and Merv as presents.'

there you have it-100% correct

I am in total agreement...just because his choice of bands may not be the greatest does not detract from him as a drummer...I play the drums and this clip really shows not just fats, fats hands...but a keen ear for timing."I think it might be.......me" E.V. 6/16/08 Cola. S.C.0 -
call me what you will but im really loving lars' drumming atm. I just love his bass drum work.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ksv2H963hBU
just watch that and the starting beat at the start just sounds so beast. He may not be ultra fast + technical etc but im really getting into his playing. Just wondered if anyone else like the random/cool bass drum beats he does. ALso happens in the master of puppets breakdown.0
