Monster is actually the album that got me into R.E.M. as well. For awhile, it was one of my favorite albums ever, but recently, I listened to it and I was like, "well, I still really like it, but it's not that deep." Now, of course, records don't need to be deep for me to enjoy them, but I felt that Monster was just a bunch of really good R.E.M. songs, nothing else.

'Tongue' and 'Strange Currencies' are terrific - they break up the pace of the album from being a loud, noisy affair.

And 'I Took Your Name' is probably in my top 5 of favorite R.E.M. songs.

  • Im with you, but i love Up.

I love up but cant stand reveal.

I know I said it in this thread already, but I don't get how people don't like Reveal. I have loved it since the day I got it.

Just lacks the emotional depth of their other records, well to me anyway.....

I can see how people can like it but it never truly hit me, not like Up.....

Also, on both Reveal and Around The Sun, REM dont sound like a band.....to me it could be anyone playing on those records.....especially Around The Sun....

I like Around the Sun as well, but not as much as Reveal.

I don't think anyone's mentioned it yet, but "I Don't Sleep, I Dream" is also a great song, even though the lyrics "I'll settle for a cup of coffee but you know what I really need" sound like something Motley Crue would come up with.

I really like Monster, while not one of my very favourate REM albums it's certainly around the top half. New Adventures on the other hand i've never understood the love this album gets, sure it's got 4 absolutely amazing REM tracks and a couple of others that are ok, but the other half of the album is just dull, dull, dull!

I prefer Reveal to Around The Sun if anything.....

Just felt there was something missing on those records.....but whatever it was sure feels like its back on the new single :D

Around the Sun is my favourite of all their albums. :)
Back to the main issue I was really disappointed with Monster.

Well, i just think I'm bored with the others. Don't like Electron Blue but the rest is exellent. Give it a go, you'll learn.

I think I'll dig it out later today and give it a spin..... :)

Report back tomorrow and let me know. Don't put in Monster by mistake though.
  • Monster is one of those albums that I constantly see on sale at garage sales and flea markets for 99 cents. I do enjoy "Kenneth" and "Crush" immensely however.

There are no songs on that album that I can ever skip. Hell, I listen to most of them twice.

I don't have any REM, which album should I start with?
Honestly the reason why they slept on me is because I thought their music was kind of cheesy.
I just turned 13 when Monster came out so I was still into the angst grunge still.

First REM album to start with?

New Adventures is their best in my opinion. Out Of Time is their worst, only 1 or 2 good songs the rest is crap! Monster I would probably put somewhere in the middle.
